Why does my VGA monitor look better than my DVI monitor?

This monitor I'm currently looking at is a 17 inch acer AL1714 1280x1024 and its contrast ratio is only 300:1.
But when looking at the picture quality, it looks better, the images are less grainy and alot smoother looking, and the colors are much more bright.
I'm comparing all of this to my Samsung syncmaster T220 22inch at 1680x1050.
The VGA one probably has a higher color depth than the DVI one, which uses color dithering to simulate more colors.
Excuse my lack of proper terminology tonight, I'm very tired and need sleep. :frown:

try to play with the OSD settings.

or maybe your 22 inch monitor can't handle that resolution. try to lower the resolution

Yea it does, this one has 370 cd/m2 and the other one has less than 320.
Thats brightness, color depth is how many colors can be reproduced accurately. Most TN panels only do real 22-bit instead of 24-bit color and use dithering to get the missing ones.
The Acer has better real contrast and dot pitch, smaller pixels; so the image is smoother.
Dynamic contrast is marketing speak, its impossible to measure it.
The 22" screen would look better if it was higher resolution at the same size. VGA and DVI look the same at 1280x1024 so VGA is not* detrimental at that resolution or many others until the really high ones.
Edit: sorry missed a word
