Some weird shit started happening with my PC after playing Dead Island, and I can’t figure out what could be the problem. I installed and started playing said game, all of the settings set to high (which was the default anyway). The game was running smoothly at good fps and no stuttering whatsoever. However, after about 3-4 hours into the game, the computer crashed: the screen got covered in artifacts (or just completely covered in one color) and the sound was looping. This happened again after I restarted the PC and continued the game, but it happened much sooner, like 5-10 minutes into it. So at this point I thought my videocard was overheating, since this was one of the more demanding games I’ve been playing. So I decided to set the game settings to medium. It seemed to have fixed the problem and I was able to play it for about 2 days. And then, it started happening again. But this time, when I would restart the system, it would either crash again right as it entered Windwos, or it would make one long beeping sound, followed by three short ones when I would try to turn the PC on, which is indicating a videocard problem I think. But I was able to run it again after re-connecting the videocard. So then I got software to check my hardware temperatures while playing and see if anything at all was overheating. So I launched the game, played for about 5 minutes and checked the temperatures, and they were all within range. I have a GeForce GTX 280, and from what I read, a temperature of like 85 ºC during games is okay for it (and the critical temperature being over 100 ºC), and the temperature of my videocard was around 75-80ºC just before it crashed again. All other temperatures like CPU and mainboard were fine as well. Then I thought it might be a driver problem, so I downloaded the latest nvidia drivers and it didn’t crash for the rest of the day (about 4 hours of gameplay). On the second day, same shit started happening again. It also started crashing now in other games that used to work perfectly fine (like Dawn of War 2), but other less demanding games don’t cause crashes (like Assassin’s Creed 2). But since nothing seems to be overheating, what could be the problem? It's strange because sometimes it won't crash at all, and sometimes it can't handle 10 minutes of gameplay... The reason I’m worried is that I had a different videocard on the same PC about two years ago that had similar problems. Games started crashing or the screen would just go black for a few seconds over the course of weeks, until the videocard got completely fried and I had to replace it. Now it’s happening to this videocard… So might it be related to some other hardware part? Here’s my specs just in case: GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8300 2.83 GHz Mainboard: ASUSTeK P5Q 2GB of RAM but not sure which brand. The problem has been there on and off for about 4-5 days. Any ideas what might be fucking me up?
May seem like a silly question, but is it a legal version of the game? A pirated version could contain a virus, it's very strange that the problem has only started happening after you've been playing dead island
85+C is kinda bad the only thing i can think of is that your clocks on your card are unstable. Use ATItool to see if it is unstable. [editline]15th September 2011[/editline] or your cooling sucks complete ass.
Well I seem to have found the problem... At some point the computer started refusing to boot completely and kept giving me one long and three short beeps each time, so I started checking the wires. One of the wires from the assembly that has to be connected from the motherboard to my videocard seems to have fried up. The metal ending on one of those wires had a really dark gray tone, close to black, compared to the other ones which were light gray. After replacing the assembly with a different one, the problem went away. Now I just need to know how to avoid this in the future...
