• Why does my internet die when I saturate it?

I have AT&T internet service. I got the 6.00mb/s service, and whenever I start downloading at 400kb/s or more I can't browse the internet. All the pages time out and can't connect to the server. I don't lose connection to MSN or Steam chat, but I can't connect to them if I'm not already connected. So basically, it's extremely difficult to make new connections while I'm downloading anything. This isn't just bittorrent or anything, this is Steam, or any plain old Http download. I doubt anyone here can fix the problem other than AT&T, but I'm just curios as to what could be causing it. It's extremely annoying because back when I had the 1.5mb/s service I never had this problem. [editline]08:51PM[/editline] Also, it really only happens after about 10 minutes of downloading. If it's shorter than that I have no problems. Anything longer creates the problem.
limit your maximum speed per connection to like 350 Kb/s
limit your maximum speed per connection to like 350 Kb/s
Is there a way to do that globally? (Linux or Windows) AFAIK, Steam can't do it, and I don't think Firefox can. [editline]09:03PM[/editline] I'll see if I can get a hold of AT&T tomorrow and see if they can do anything.
maybe it prefers olive oil. :smug:
^ Oh thats cute.
Mine does this too. I have 35mbp/s download (supposedly), I download at 400kbp/s and my ping shoots up to 3000.

Sounds like a shitty router. Perhaps swap it out with a spare..?
Shitty network hardware seems to die temporarily if you pressure it too much. Check your router and your PC's network adapter.
Yeah I'd also say it's the router, I'm guessing they gave you one of those POS 2wire modem/router boxes? I hate those, the two that I've had both sucked. I'd say call them up and ask for a new one.
The key isn't the downstream, it's the upstream, which I'm guessing is set to unlimited (it is in most clients by default). What is happening is all your bandwidth is consumed by the bittorrent client, leaving nothing for your browser or whatever. Try lowering it. Find out what your upload speed is, it could be really low if AT&T is a bitch. My 24mbps connection for example only allows for 1mbps up.
You guys remember the difference between mbps and Mbps?

If your router is a pile of shit then it could be having problems handling the speed for 10 minutes. But your router would have to be really shit or on its last legs for that to happen. If you can you could try to connect directly to the modem and see if the same behavior occurs.
My network adapter dies out if there's too much going on and I have to restart it. Pisses me off.
Just get a 3'rd party modem. AT&T's are shit. You wouldn't believe the problems I had with them.
I happen to like the router verizon gave me, It's basic, but works great and gets great reception for a wireless g. What kind does AT&T give you?

Those routers are shit.
My 2wire is the same way and it generates alot of heat for such a simple piece of equipment.

So it's not a stretch to say that it's the cause of my problem.
Modem+router all in one box usually suck ass. I prefer the "separate modem, separate router" method myself. My Router is just the common Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT v24 Generic. Runs like a dream. Overclocked to 240MHz from 200MHz, and boosted the wireless signal from 28 (default) to 100. Added a custom heatsink to it's processor as well, to make it live longer. Might add a fan soon too, it gets warm.
Do you have a 6MB/s or 6Mbps connection. There's a big difference.

No fucking clue why I bothered replying. I am a sad sad individual.
Do you have a 6MB/s or 6Mbps connection. There's a big difference.
It is att so 6Mbps
Just had a thought, have you tried a hard reset yet? It's been reset a few times since then [editline]04:25PM[/editline]
It is att so 6Mbps
Yep 6Mbps
Wouldn't having 2 boxes increase your ping?
Not significantly, I didn't notice a difference after I added another router to my network.
Just had a thought, have you tried a hard reset yet? Might fix at least some of your problems.
This. Note: If the settings weren't restored to default, then you did it wrong. If that doesn't fix it (of it it does but it starts to slow down after a while), call AT&T and ask for a replacement. I suggest switching to a standalone modem and then buy your own router. Those all-in-one units usually suck.
To reset a 2 wire you need to turn it on wait for the one light to go green then hold the reset button until it restarts.
