They wanted GNU/Linux to run well under [I]their[/I] virtualization software. They only way to get the patches accepted as a permanent part of the Linux kernel was to make them GPL. It makes sense, I guess, but it's not as big a leap as the author of the article seems to believe it is. Anyway, it's better than random treats and FUD campaigns.

Anyway, it's better than random treats and FUD campaigns.[/QUOTE] Microsoft has a deal with Red Hat to make Windows run better under Red Hat's virtualization software, and for Red Hat to run better under Microsoft's virtualization. It's nothing like Novel's deal at least. But it does seem dumb that the only reason HyperV is open sourced is so that Linux runs well under Windows.
Microsoft has realized that they can't beat Linux once and for all in the server section. I'm subscribed to their free TechNet newsletter. Guess what the heading was about? A new version of Microsoft SQL Server - now with more "legacy" (Linux) compatibility. Listing that as the [B]main[/B] improvement must mean something.

As I said, on the server. Where you don't need multi-boot and locally mounting other OSes' partitions.
