The Washington Post says the incinerated partial remains of at least 274 American troops were sent to the King George County Landfill in Virginia. The report was based on database information at the Dover Air Base mortuary, where the remains of most war dead return.
The families of the dead authorized the military to dispose of the remains respectfully and with dignity. They were unaware of the landfill dumping, and Air Force officials told the Post they have no plans now to alert the families.
Military policy or regulations did not formally authorize the practice. The mortuary has handled the remains of more than 6,300 troops since 2001.
Oh damn, who thought this was a good idea?
that can't be morally right.
I assume this is more for bodies were very little of the body is left?
I assume this is more for bodies were very little of the body is left?
I'd hope so with "incinerated partial remains".
The families of the dead authorized the military to dispose of the remains respectfully and with dignity.
and so they get dumped in a landfill? That's fucked.
edit: woops
Who authorized this kind of shit? I mean really, what prick thinks its a good idea to burn the remains of those who fought for our country, and then dump them in a fucking land fill? This can't be legal, who ever authorized this should be court marshaled.
It'd be more respectful if the ashes were dumped in the ocean from a ship or something. But in the fucking dump? That's not right.
Honestly, I don't see that much of a problem with this. Yes, it'd be nice if they could get a ceremony, but they only incinerated partial remains and dumped them into the landfill. They aren't just dumping bodies in a huge trash heap. It's just the ashes, and the families consented (albeit most don't probably consider a dump respectable).
Still, I'd rather the military cut corners and save money here rather than having to shave off the armor off of HUMVEEs or give troops inadequate equipment. I subscribe to the belief that a dead body is just a dead lump of matter. Honestly, it doesn't matter what is done to the body. The dead guy doesn't care.

Guess you didn't read the whole article. The family's consented to a respectful and honorable disposal of the ashes. The familys didn't even get notified about the landfill.
I don't care what you say or some bullshit excuses about saving money, it is fucked up to toss anyone's ashes in a landfill even if it is partial. People like you are the reason this shit happens because "You don't see a problem with it." What are landfills used for? TRASH, putting partial remains of a HUMAN BEING, a SERVICEMAN, in a landfill is basically saying their trash.
When you die we will just dump you in a landfill...have some decency.
I would be pissed as hell to find out this happened to my family member, no matter if they served or not. If a regular crematory/funeral home did this they would lose their license/business.
Talk about paying respect.
Talk about paying respect.
Respect? There was no respect involved in getting blown into pieces or killed in some obscene manner.
well my day is ruined now
It's a corpse. A hunk of rotting meat. Why do people care about dead bodies so much

Said the pasty white, slightly overweight pubescent male teen from the comfort of his parents computer chair.

Because the dead body used to be a living person.

They're not going to so strip the armor off humvies or give our troops muskets instead of M16's because they have to take another 15 minutes to properly bury our dead troops.
The remains they're dumping into a land fill, a place reserved for trash, are men who died fighting for our fucking country man. They deserve more then to be dumped in a landfill. Come the fuck on man. Our military budget is hundreds of billions of dollars, there is no fucking excuse not to properly bury the remains of our dead troops.

Because that hunk of rotting meat was once a person braver then you, and died in combat, that person deserves more then to be dumped in a fucking landfill.
Well this is... fucked up. To say the least.
It's like they don't even bloody care. I wonder what our own military Facepunchers would have to say about this?

I see your point but I mean, these people died defending their country. I don't believe we should be at war, but the fact is we are. So for their bravery I think they should at least have some sort of respect.

I want to know what BigDumbAmerican has to say about this
Why didn't they make food out of all those fresh bodies. There is already a food crisis why throw away good meat?

No sense in letting good food go to waste.
Why is there this stigma around eating human flesh? Its food just like everything else right?

I thought entries for Dumbest Post of 2011 weren't being accepted anymore

Well yeah but it's made of the same things as you are.
Think about every follicle of hair, every sheen of grease, ever scar, stitch, and suture.
Plus it's totally against nature and only practiced in extreme circumstances.

I'd say being shot is a more appropriate punishment.

please elaborate

You can't be serious.

Dead serious.
