Thank god, Tor is sometimes unusably slow.
When I used it years ago, it was like 56k or worse, interesting.
TOR is slow because of slow relay nodes/servers, not because of the encryption overhead.
I can get around 500KB/s to normal web servers, but I get around 10KB/s to .onion servers.

This is also not surprising because when communicating with hidden services you're essentially using two Tor circuits. Your own, and the hidden service's.
