Four Loko is a popular new drink packed with high amounts of alcohol and caffeine. Friends and family say a Maryland woman is dead after the drink made her lose her mind.
The FDA is already looking into these products that combine caffeine with alcohol. An Eastern Shore community says their loved one is the latest victim of these potent drinks.
This vigil is about more than the lost of 21-year-old Courtney Spurry who died in St. Michaels this weekend when she crashed a Ford pickup truck into a telephone poll after a night out with her girlfriends. They drank Four Loko, an energy drink with 12 percent alcohol content—the equivalent of five to six beers in one cheap can.
"She changed that night," said Abby Sherwood, friend of the victim. "She was not the same person. She could not remember people's names. She passed out within 30 minutes of having the alcoholic beverage."
After drinking two cans of Four Loko, friends say Courtney grabbed somebody else's keys and went off.
"Courtney, she was a little peanut. She was 4' 8", weighted 100 pounds," said Lewis Spurry, the victim's uncle. "So you can imagine drinking a couple of these drinks and all of a sudden she has no control of herself."
"We have the ability to get Four Loko off the shelves nationwide," a friend of the victim said at the Thursday night vigil.
That's the community's new mission. It's already happened in Michigan and in Washington state, where nine college students nearly died at a house party.
"Every one of them that were hospitalized drank Four Loko," said a law official.
One nearby store is being proactive.
"Graul's Market is community-oriented and if it saves our community then it's coming off the shelves," said Lisa Phillips, general manager of Graul's Market.
"A high and a low do not mix well together," Sherwood said.
The victims' friends say none of them will ever pick up a can of Four Loko again. They say they hope the new website they started called banfourloko.com will be a platform to get all of these beverages out of stores in Maryland and across the country.
The makers of Four Loko say the caffeine content is no more than a cup of coffee and they stand by their product.
The government always wants something to ban.
Maybe you should, you know, drink just one and then this wouldn't happen.
I swear, people are becoming dumber and dumber, and they blame everything but themselves if something happens. I mean, with her size, you should probably watch how much you drink. Also, if she grabbed someone's keys, why didn't they stop her? They said it as if they saw her take the keys and leave somewhere...

Yeah it's like people who down energy drinks and have a heart attack.

Who the fuck drinks 2 drinks of 12% alcohol when they're built like that?!
Who the fuck drinks 2 drinks of 12% alcohol when they're sized like that?!
That's not much...12% is less than most wine.
Why all the boxes? It's true...
Oh shit I drink this stuff WOOHOO YEEHAW LOONEY TUNES MWAAHAHAHA SMASHSCREEEEEEENexxz
Oh shit I drink this stuff WOOHOO YEEHAW LOONEY TUNES MWAAHAHAHA SMASHSCREEEEEEENexxz
You do that...
That's not much...12% is less than most wine.
I'm more referring to the fact that the combination of alcohol and caffeine is already not a particularly good one, let alone her size.

Mixing the two is not as bad as you may think.

There are 24 oz in each can, which means there's 4.71 standard drinks. That means two cans of it is equal to 500mL of whisky.
Still, this doesn't mean it should be banned, probably just need to stick some sort of big warning label on it.

Wow your math is way wrong. 24*.12=2.88.
So many boxes...

Wow your math is way wrong.
695 * 0.12 = 83.4mL (Pure ethanol) / 0.40 (40% abv whisky &c) * 2 = 417mL
Okay so the chart I used for drink equivalence before was a little off. That's still a lot of alcohol.
24 ounces, times 12% equals about 2 shots of 100% alcohol. But since most liquor is typically around 40%, it's more like 3.
It's early, and honestly I forgot where I was going with that equation. I had a better point but I can't remember it.
Fuck I need some coffee.

It's more like four per can. (50mL shots are about average). The woman in the story drank two cans. Two cans is 8 shots or 400mL of 80 proof.
I'd drink this if I really wanted to waste the energy boost on trying to stand up without falling.
All of the M.A.D.D soccer moms will have a field day with this one.

Ok I got it. So it has 12% alcohol, 24oz can. Beer has around 6% alcohol in a 12oz can. This is the same as her drinking 4 beers. So what? She'd have gotten pretty tipsy but not enough to "lose her mind." Something else happened.

And there's your problem.
Fucking crazy bitch.
I always thought Caffeine in combination with Alcohol was really bad, which is a reason why it says "Don't consume Alcohol and Caffeine" on some products in germany.

12% alcohol?
Once I drank a medium bottle of Jagermeister, and I'm still alive, and that contains a bit more alcohol...
I've downed 1.75L of Vodka in an 8 hour period and I'm just fine. I weigh 155lbs.

I'm pretty sure your size/weight have something to do with how much alcohol you can consume before going off your knocker.

A bit yes.
Four Lokos are frankly cans of radioactive piss. But if you drink it fast and disregard the taste, you'll get a pretty good buzz, but damn it is a really shitty drunk. For the price of $2.50 getting women loose has never been cheaper.
Mixing a stimulant with a depressant is a bad idea.
I drink around 4 of these, I'm a broke highschooler and getting wasted for like $10 is a good deal, shit with another 10 bucks you can buy a blunt and have a blackout.
Seriously my girlfriend weighs 96 pounds, she drank half of one and was pretty buzzed. Orange and grape actually taste good imo, like alcoholic koolaid everything else is crap......even blue raspberry.
4'8, 100 pounds, genetics, caffeine, alcohol
for some reason that just doesnt sound like a very good combination to me
Maybe she was just crazy.

Genetics? Where does it mention genetics?
Haha, these things will get you bombed so goddamn fast. We pound them down here on my college campus, power through 2-3 of them and your motor control is fucked for the rest of the night.
Banning them because they're strong is retarded. Everclear gets you hammered fast and it isn't banned, because it's the drinker's responsibility to watch how much they are consuming. Blaming a drink because you or someone else did something retarded is like blaming McDonalds for making you fat.
