A gunman has shot and wounded three people on a high-speed train travelling from Amsterdam to Paris before being overpowered by passengers and arrested by police.
The shooting happened at around 6pm as the Thalys train was travelling near Arras in northern France, the French state rail company SNCF said.
French media said the gunman had shot a Kalashnikov on board the train, and was also armed with knives.
The local paper La Voix du Nord reported that two US marines on the train had overpowered the man. The paper reported that the marines had intervened when the man was loading heavy ammunition in a toilet on the train. Both marines were reported to have been injured, one by gunfire, the other by a knife.
The motives behind the attack were not immediately known, but French anti-terrorist police took over the investigation.
Right place at the right time. Shame their vacation had to end up like this.
what the fuck, I was on the exact same train a week ago, and took the one from Paris-Amsterdam yesterday.
About the train itself: it's mostly used by tourists afaik.
Gotta respect a marine who not only would protect American lives, but the lives of random people in a country they're vacationing in.
That and even with two guys, to bum rush a guy with an AK is ballsy as fuck.
Semper Fi, one last bastard to go around.
That's a hell of a story to bring back home.
thank fuck the US marines were there
knowing france it would have taken 17 hours for their police to actually get something done
The soldiers weren't both American, the other soldier is British.
Freedom doesn't take a vacation.
Semper Fi, boys. Fantastic job. Probably prevented a really big tragedy.

That's not what the story says, got another source?

I'm going to guess that you weren't shot then, or at threat, in any way, shape or form. Obviously this is not a pointless statement and you are at a great deal of threat as you were once at the same place as someone who comitted the crime. Truly inspirational stuff.

Yes, this person has committed the truly impossible act of attempting to comprehend a serious incident by linking it to their personal experiences! Nobody has ever done this before.

I do but they're in french. Here is one of them anyway : http://www.lesoir.be/968670/article/actualite/france/2015-08-21/fusillade-dans-un-thalys-l-agression-eu-lieu-en-territoire-belge

But it didn't happen in France.

Honestly I'd take everything with a grain of salt (including that they were marines) for the next couple of hours until it all clears up
you're welcome france
again
America protecting the world once again

French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve is saying it was two Americans that stopped the attack.
Source (video): http://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2015/aug/21/france-train-attack-bravery-passengers
However, they're saying that one American and one Briton are in critical condition with a third person also injured, possible the other American based on other reports. But I would seriously just wait a bit for officials to figure out what happened and release the info rather than news sites that are starving right now.
Marines aren't soldiers. Soldiers are Army.
Is that really important ?
Probably saved a lot of lives that day, lets hope they both receive the Medal of Honor.

While the actions of these soldiers/marines are indeed heroic, it does not warrant the country's highest decoration.
They may receive praise, commendation and maybe a decoration that is significantly lower than the MoH, there usually isnt much criterion for medals given to off-duty personell.

It's sort of like you constantly getting called by your brother's name. It gets annoying fast.
It's odd that only CBS and NPR are reporting that the Americans were off-duty marines. All the other domestic outlets are just saying "Americans."
Wonder what the reason for that is?

It's really not all that important to anyone but military guys. You're all part of the same armed forces. It's the fucking magazine/ clip thing all over again. Nobody fucking cares because you still get the idea across.

It hasn't been confirmed by any government officials other than that they were Americans. Only some dude that was there was tweeting and saying they were US Marines.

if nobody cared then wouldn't nobody say anything? unless they aren't people i guess

I know this is literally arguing semantics, but specific terms exist to define specific things, I totally understand not using a term when you don't know it or don't need to use it to get the point across, but having those definitions explained does help people understand things a little better with more perspective than they might have without that info.
But again I am literally arguing semantics here so as much as I personally care about language, it isn't that big of a deal but it warrants being explained I guess
