The revised diagram was first spotted by Steam Database and posted on its Twitter profile. The diagram in the latest client beta update, dated July 23 2014, shows a mock-up that abandons the left-side buttons in favor of an analog thumbstick. The thumbstick sits to the bottom right of the controller's signature trackpad on the left side. If the image represents a planned iteration of the controller, it could be a move to make the Steam Controller more versatile.
One analog stick? That's a little odd. I remember that having a single analog stick was quite odd when I first purchased a PSP. I'd like to say that this new concept is an improvement, but I never got to feel the first version that was introduced to the masses.
Perhaps they will add another analog stick later?
Is it actually an analog stick, or is it like one of those sticks on the Neo Geo Pocket Color which would ostensibly operate as a d-pad would? Because that would be so nice.

this is better for weapon swapping, since this works good for FPS this is a major improvement. I hate the dpad on the xbox controller, I'd rather an 8 directional smaller stick I've been thinking about an xbox one controller for myself (PC) but I can't wait until I get this
An analog stick? Isn't that kind of redundant because of the sensor pads or w/e they're called?
it's probably there more for easier menu navigation and 2D fighting game control
it's probably there more for easier menu navigation and 2D fighting game control
Most fighting game fans I know would take a d-pad over an analog stick every single time.
I think it's kind of interesting how it's gotten progressively less radical as time has gone on. Just proof that the generic controller is a pretty refined design over the years, though I'm sure some changes are possible. I still want to try out the touch pads myself.
Weren't the touch pads pretty crap? At least in the early ones that the beta testers got.
thank god they got rid of that hideous dpad
Weren't the touch pads pretty crap? At least in the early ones that the beta testers got.
As I recall, most people said the touch pads were amazing.

I got the chance to use the initial version. IMO the pads aren't awful but they aren't exactly great, either. I played FTL using it and it controlled well enough, but I couldn't see using it for an FPS. It was a bit slow. Oh, also both track pads make this annoying ticking noise like a Geiger counter as you use them.
I feel like they're doing this because not everyone is going to get used to movement with the left pad and they may want the option of a traditional joystick (which can also be used for weapon swapping etch like you've all been saying); but aiming with a joystick was never good at all, and the touch pad is quite a ways better in terms of aiming accuracy so a right joystick isn't needed. What are those RG and LG things on the back?

Not really a problem since most games usually have you either using one grip or another, but it's still like the end of a kid-friendly trident you're awkwardly grasping to play, firm though it was. Not to mention the extra weight plugged into the back of it for rumble or save packs, or the old Pokemon Stadium poketransfer thing... More on-topic, I hope they figure out a good position for that analog stick. Something about its positioning around the center really looks.. Awkward and uncomfortable.
I feel like they're eventually just going to say 'fuck it' and comission a SteamPowered™ controller to Razer. [editline]24th July 2014[/editline] with the regular two analog sticks and dpad
*sigh* This thing's gotten less interesting with every subsequent appearance. Can't we just go back to the first design with the touchscreen instead of trying to ape the 360 controller?

Although with that said I imagine even the Xbox controllers are micro-switched, since contacts are so last millennium...
Nobody I know, and I mean absolutely zero, who actually used that controller, myself included, liked the touchpad design. All but a tiny handful of reviews where people were praising that design have been made by people who have not actually used the thing. Practically everyone who has actually used it despised it. You can improve on controller design immensely, but track pads are not the way to go, and will never be until you can replicate tactile feedback perfectly. Tactile feedback is king. End of discussion.
Oh, also both track pads make this annoying ticking noise like a Geiger counter as you use them.
I'm pretty sure that was intentional, to give it more feedback
Probably equally as revolutionary a controller but they don't seem very similar in design
By revolutionary do you mean a revolution in being extremely awkward and a huge pain on the thumbs? I loved my N64 but it has one of the worst designed controllers in the history of consoles

How the fuck do you use it?
How the fuck do you use it?
With your hands.

[editline]24th July 2014[/editline] with the regular two analog sticks and dpad
If this happens I wouldn't mind a swappable D-Pad and analog stick (since it will inevitably be in the 360/Xbone layout). I much prefer Sony's layout to Microsoft's.
-not particularly relevant to the topic- I wonder what other revisions will be made before this thing gets released.
