My right click on my G5 recently broke, so I'm going to buy a new mouse.
I've read a few reviews on cnet and heard that the G500 and Sidewinder X8 are both good, but I wanted to hear from you guys before buying either, or another one.
Its a decent mouse for a pretty good price

If you like the shape of the G5 get another G5/MX shaped mouse. I recommend the MX518 just because I like optical, they're cheap, and mines been working fine for 5 years.

Does laser have any advantages over optical, or vice-versa?
I've had my Razer Deathadder for over a year now. I haven't had the chance to try other mice made for gaming purposes, though I'm really liking it.

Not really, laser works on more surfaces and generally has a higher dpi, and I've found optical mice to be more reliable (in terms of tracking, some surfaces do seem to cause the laser to be a bit glitchy). Laser's benefits don't really appeal to me, as I always use my MX518 at 400 dpi (maximum 1600 dpi) and I still use an old fashioned ball-mouse pad because I'm used to the surface.
I love my Logitech G9 to bits.
I mean, C'mon! You can pimp it out!
Razor Deathadder is the way to go.
the G500 is a better G5
if you liked the G5 then you'll love the 500
Go with the Logitech G9
I have the Razer Imperator. It's my heaven. You still may want to go with Logitech though.
Doesn't Logitech replace broken mice? You might not necessarily have to buy a new one.
man im terrible at games, i really wish i had one of these fancy gaming mice
oh and maybe a nice gaming keyboard with lots of gaming buttons
and maybe a nice gaming chair with gaming sound
mx518
DO IT
Follow jlj1 his advice.
The mx 518
Very smooth and light , while still being agile like a Kitty-Cat
Mx 518 all the way!
Razer Deathadder, go go go.
I don't understand WHY people need a 'gaming mouse'. Why can't you use a regular mouse like us?
Because regular mice are slow and not built for maximum performance...
I'm currently using a Cooler Master Sentinel and it kicks ass.
Wait, what? Maximum performance? I don't get that? What, is the Mouses CPU a Pentium 4? But seriously here, how is it "slow and not built for 'maximum performance"?'

:flashfap: Oh god that looks awesome!
MX518 is the way to go though, awesome and cheap mouse.
Because regular mice are not specially engineered to be highly responsive and functional, they're just stock parts made to get the job done.
What's not to get?
Good point.
Get the G500

The difference in responsiveness in a 'gaming' mouse and any other mouse will only be different in an order of magnitude so small it would be impossible to detect.
Honestly, you're better off with a cheap, reliable mouse. I have an $8 shitty mouse at home, and honestly it's fine except it's not overly comfortable for my hand. And its 800 dpi, which is twice that of my MX518 which I prefer.
You've been sucked in by gaming companies my friend :v:. Gaming mice are expensive gimmicks, the only reason you should ever buy one is if it's legitimately better built than other mice or more comfortable for your hand than other mice.

This, i personally use the microsoft intellimouse 3.0, have been using it for 6-7 years, has never failed me.

I have one of these aswell, a really nice mouse, comfortable has a high dpi and the lighting is neat feature.
Regular mice are fine for things like RTS and games that don't require as much precision, but I don't really like using regular mice when it comes to playing an FPS, which is what I generally play. Gaming keyboards are useless all around unless you play MMOs for a living.
What do people generally prefer about the MX518 other than the price?
The sidewiner has a horrible shape, get one that fits your hand (right/left handed mouse)
I'd recommend the G3 if they still made it. I've had mine for a while and it's by far the best mouse I've ever used. It goes up to 2000dpi but I only use it at 800. I think the whole gaming mouse thing is just a marketing technique but it certainly works. Honestly, any old mouse will do. Unless it's a ball mouse. Those fuckers get crap on the little wheels after about 2 weeks use. I've heard nothing but good things about the MX518 and it's probably going to be my next mouse so I'd say go with that. Razer makes a great product but the prices are absurd.
