I know basically nothing about PC building other than actually putting it all together. I've been meaning to upgrade my current build for sometime. I am looking for something future-proof and can keep up with newer games (Star Citizen, Project Cars etc.) and possibly even VR.
Current Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.40GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengence 8 GB Dual Channel DDR3
MOBO: Gigabyte ZZZX-UD3H
GPU: MSI Twin Frozr Geforce GTX 660 Ti 3GB
HDD: Samsung 1TB
PSU: Seasonic 620W
SoundCard: ASUS Xonar DSX
My case is an Corsair 500R
Prices are in Canadian and I usually go through Newegg, NCIX or MemoryExpress.
Any help with planning this would be appreciated.
Get a 1080, a SSD, and 8GB more RAM and save the rest
Hell if you got $3000 to blow you might as well upgrade the board and CPU while you're at it.

Eh at that point you're wasting money, unless you bump up to an i7 as well. The best current gen i5 performs equally if not only a hair better than the i5 3570K. And really an i7 only offers better multicore performance which only really matters with heavily CPU intensive tasks like video rendering.
Hardly possible to spend 3K in one go without diminished returns. Better to save the rest for upgrading more often to get most out of it.
Look into high refresh rate screens though. Those are expensive but really worth it!

If I was to go this route would I need to upgrade the PSU at all?
And I guess whats a good SSD? I've never used them before.
PSU is fine. You could run 1080 SLI on 620W.
Get a Samsung SSD. They're considered the best, but they come in at $150 USD/$195 CAN for 500GB.
Alright I think I got everything picked out

RAM: http://www.ncix.com/detail/corsair-vengeance-8gb-2x4gb-ddr3-a5-57078.htm

y/n?
Personally if I had $3000 to spend on upgrades I would definitely get a new mobo, cpu and ram, since youre still using DDR3 and it would require you to upgrade your mobo and cpu to use DDR4, which will future proof you better than sticking with that for a few more years.

There is almost no performance gain in upgrading to the latest i5/z170 motherboard and ddr4 ram.
While it would cost him at least 400-500$
A common saying when it comes to PC building is: "The best way to futureproof is money in the bank"

Don't get that monitor, get the ASUS PG279Q. It's basically the same monitor but IPS instead of TN, hich provides greater viewing angles and color accuracy.
Ok so:

Any other suggestions before I order?
Couldn't you either get 16 GB of RAM instead (should be about the same), or if you are really feeling crazy 32 GB (way more expensive)?
If I had 3000$ I would just get 32 GB of RAM in the end. But it is up to you.

You should also ask for help on this thread. Post your final build if you can over there, before buying it just in case.

Thought it was 32GB. Nevermind.
I've ordered the parts thanks for the help guys!
