Herpetology is the study of amphibians and reptiles. Studying/catching/hunting/owning reptiles and amphibians as a hobby is called Herping. I made this thread to see if anyone else herps and maybe offer some advice to anyone interested in starting. here are some of the herp-fauna in my area, some of which i have kept for study
Anyone else open this thread expecting to learn about herpes?
Did you make this thread just so you cuold make a herp joke
I am SO sorry but, Herp Derp. I am very sorry. Also turtles are amazing.
I was expecting herping derping. aka HERP DERP :ninja:
Anyone else open this thread expecting to learn about herpes?
I was expecting something relating to the term "herp". pleasantly surprised.
What a fascinating thread.
I was honestly expecting something like herpy derpy. But to regain topic, (slightly) I have a pet turtle named jaws. Although, I don't know much about reptiles.
Every time, herpes joke, this is what I have to look foward to as a career... :saddowns: But it is to be expected, anyway turtles are awesome so it is worth it
Cute turtles.
Cute turtles.
I caught the little ones today, any good ideas for names?
Turtles are the best herps.
I caught the little ones today, any good ideas for names?
Franklin. That's the only name I can think of. It's a cute turtle name too.
Herpetology is awesome and so are the people that study it. I've raised tons of frogs and toads from tadpoles, and had snakes and a turtle for a long time as well. Reptiles and amphibians are fucking awesome.
If I remember correctly, those aren't turtles, they're "Red eared tortoises" I know this because we've had one of the lovely things in this house for 16 years. They're now illegal to buy here in the UK, but not own thankfully Edit: We used to have two, except one of them stopped eating after coming out of hibernation and fell deathly ill :frown:

The fact they're swimming in the water is a bit of a give away that they aren't a tortoise.
Herp. In the summer I go out in the woods behind my house, it's pretty much a swamp back there. Pretty neat. Wish I could find a turtle back there. That's also a bad thing, because of the fact that it's so wet there aren't really any snakes around here.
The bullfrogs that live around my house kick ass As do the five-lined skinks, which i can get tame enough to take food from my hand. They suck at telling the difference between food and hand, though.
turtle with spots in first pic is a Eastern painted, the other is a red eared slider, the turtle in the secnd picture is also a red ear slider The snake is a copper head and the forth pic is a toad
Pretty sure those are red-ear sliders.
The bullfrogs that live around my house kick ass As do the five-lined skinks, ]
We have very similar herps around my location are you in the south east?

Isn't touching frogs dangerous for the frogs? :ohdear:
here is a vid of some of my turtles in their tank [editline]18th June 2011[/editline]
Isn't touching frogs dangerous for the frogs? :ohdear:
only if you hold them too long and your hands are dry
We have very similar herps around my location are you in the south east?
Yeah. You ever find any spadefoot toads? Those are the best due to how goofy they look and how spectacularly lazy they are. The yellow patterns they can have are neat as well. Not the best picture since I fucked up the camera settings, but it gets the point across.
do not see them very often, I am in moutains of nc so it may be too cold I see them when i go east to visit relatives though looked up their population map for NC:ms:

I herp every day, often with my parents.
I can't really say for sure without seeing his back feet but that looks like a young bullfrog to me. Could easily be a pig frog, though.
Pretty sure they're bullfrogs. Pig frogs don't go this far up north. This thread has made me want to go take more pictures... don't think they're out yet though.
