Want to learn Bass Guitar, what would be the best bass to start with?

Pretty straightforward question, I want to learn to play the bass guitar, My budget is about £100/£200 prospectively. The type of music i'm looking toward playing is prog/rock. I came to ask FP as there are so many different bass guitars out there and i can't tell which would be best, to be honest.
Well you wouldn't want one that isn't to expensive but is good, You could ask your local Music shop or something I bought a bass guitar for £120 (I don't play it though) :v:

No offense but, why would you spend so much money on something like that and never play it?

the Squire Bronco Bass . . Perfect for your first bass, inexpensive and has a pretty decent sound .
It's based on the legendary Mustang Bass . . It's very balanced for just one pickup, has a great treble and bass range . . It's all you need and they are cheap as hell .
Here's a video of my playing one .

Here's a retarded question for you: Would i need an amp, and if so, what would be the best, you reckon?
Look at getting one of these. It provides everything you need to get started, and the instrument itself is respectable one. The amp is also very good, the Rumble series is fantastic. It's a little more than your budget but it's worth the money.

Well holy shit that looks perfect, Is that a respected site aswell?
I started with a $200 Ibanez and it served me great... Came with a shitty amp, but just for practicing and learning it's ok

yep.
just buy something that isn't expensive and play until you get huge blisters on your fingers, and then you will become a bass god in no time.

Hell, if you're desperate take the B and e strings off a guitar, that's how I started

Im a better guitarist than bass player.

Well, i'll reckon i'll go for that set then, It seems incredibly good for the price, I'm sure i can scrounge the money.
Well, i've spoken to my parents(Who are helping provide a significant chunk of the budget) And i can definitely afford that bass + amp pack. Thanks, Dcalde78!
you're welcome. that'll keep you going for a while and the amp is good enough that if you upgrade to a different bass, you don't need another amp to practice with
Sweet! When you get good and get more money, I recommend a Fender Jazz bass. Or a Precision bass. I like the jazz bass better because it has more punch.

I play the Jazz bass with my band on stage and I can play anything from metal to blues. it has kind of a bad neck though. if you decide you like playing bass and eventually want to get something better, go with a music man. in fact i had to use my friends music man on stage once because my fender's neck was a bit off. very nice, but a bit pricey.
hope i helped!
I reckon i'm gonna go with the P-Bass, it looks far more ergonomic and nicer to use, I'm only starting out, after all.
