Is there any free program that can convert a batch of FLAC files to Apple Lossless in a MP4 container?
Thanks
I thought Itunes did that.. oh well.

:( iTunes doesn't support FLAC.

Try audacity.

I ain't sure if it supports Apple Lossless though :/
May have to download the codec for Audacity.. try googling around for specific codecs that work with it.

Oh well. I'll just export the FLAC files to WAV, tag them in itunes and export them as apple lossless. It'll be tedious, but they were a bit weird in the first place.
Edit: decoded them with flac frontend flawlessly in about a minute.
Edit 2: encoded them with apple lossless after retaging them. It finished in a minute or so at 111.1x
ffmpeg
Edit: this appears to be pretty difficult to do since there is no public ALAC encoder.
There is software that will do it easily but it costs (dbpowerAmp: my favorite)
I would suggest converting to wav with foobar, then converting to alac with itunes.
Didn't notice your edits...
I'll leave my edit there for anyone else who wants to convert flac to alac (no one?)
Why would you want to convert to Apple Lossless? If you're going to put them into your iPod, don't do it since you aren't able to hear the difference.

Same with VINYL :smug:

you would notice the difference if you were carrying around vinyls with you instead of an ipod.
The guy didn't want irrelevant input. Please take your vinyl love to a vinyl appropriate thread.

I think he just wants a lossless format for archival purposes that works with iTunes.

You know OP, Mediamonkey and I believe Foobar as well work with iPods AND support FLAC.
Zeke what do you mean Ipods work with foobar?

There's iPod pluggins for foobar that replace the need for iTunes.

[del]Someone point me to one?
I just spent 5 minutes googling, can't really see what I want.
I hate the hell out of Itunes and have been waiting for my ipod to die so I could remove Itunes.
If I don't need Itunes my love for my Ipod will rise dramatically..[/del]
Found foo_pod, the download link was broken though.
I'll check out foo_dop later tonight.
There's a plugin called foo_dop, it works really well on all iPods, I use it all the time.

The free version of dbpowerAmp can do FLAC to ALAC.

I'd suggest using Faasoft Audio Converter for batch converting FLAC to Apple Lossless, WAV, MP3, AIFF, etc, no matter you are using a Mac or PC.
But also just as a warning, I'm fairly sure playing .alac actually consumes your ipod battery more - read that somewhere, not sure if legit
good gosh this thread is ancient...
also playing ALAC on an ipod is pointless UNLESS, you're using a stereo which can decode the audio directly from the digital file; most new ipod compatible stereos do this.

when playing mp3 the player converts it to WAV so maybe ALAC to WAV isn't as consuming.
It's the reading of more data that will drain the battery, depends how heavy it is.
oh shit
so it is lol
