I'm pretty sure my current adapter (Netgear WPN111) is dying. I have a 18mbps connection and should be getting at least 1.6mb/s download speed on steam, but sometimes it maxes out at 600kb/s or even drops down below 100kb/s. While on the other computer, which has an ethernet cable linking it up to the router, gets a good 1.8mb/s download speed and rarely ever drops below 500kb/s. So now i'm looking for a nice wireless connector that's below $50.
Not sure what kind of a connector you want (USB, PCI etc) so I picked out some choices. As long as you're running Windows, everything will probably work out of the box, and since Dealextreme sells cheap shit that uses generic chipsets, you can probably identify and get drivers on Linux and OS X if you really need to.
I'd prefer a PCI one with no antenna. Are there any cheap ones like this on newegg? I'm not so sure about dealextreme
I'm pretty sure all wireless PCI cards have antennas. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127218 That should be sufficient for your needs. I have a TP-LINK WN781ND and to be honest it sucks, i only get about 3 bars on my wireless signal and my download speeds fluctuate all the time even with an antenna upgrade.
I'm pretty sure all wireless PCI cards have antennas. The Airport card in my MacBook sitting ON TOP OF THE COMPUTER THIS CARD IS IN gets ~2x faster speed and rarely fluctuates. I am not happy with this card at all.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124115&cm_re=linksys_wireless_pci-_-33-124-115-_-Product The basic Linksys Wireless G PCI adapter for under $40 and free shipping. We have been selling and deploying these in the field for years without issue. Also, the only alternative to an antenna sticking out would be to go with the USB stick variant which occupies a USB port.
