More than twelve and a half thousand people in St. John parish are at risk of a brain eating amoeba detected in the water system.
Which means folks in Reserve, Garyville and Mt. Airy are advised to take precaution.
I really hope its not very hot there.
god damn i'd be scared shitless being told i got some little fuckers in my skull with a taste for brains.
I honestly hope no ones affected. I've always heard of this shit happening in hot places like Lake Havasu on the Nevada/Arizona border, where I heard of a couple of people dying this way. Since this could affect thousands, I really hope no ones affected.
There was an episode of House about these amoebas. Really scary stuff.
This specific thing is one of my biggest fears. It genuinely horrifies me, and having issues with hypochondria amplifies it a thousand times over.
oh man, that's terrifying
95% fatality rate. Thats insane.
95% fatality rate. Thats insane.
As I recall from looking in to it, it basically has to be treated pretty much immediately, and as I recall the drug they use causes necrosis at the effected areas. So its not like you'll heal up from it well either.

Was that the one where they caught it from shoving water up their nose, or the one where they caught it from eating dog poop?

Wear noseplugs when swimming. Instant way to completely eliminate the risk.

I don't watch House but the only way to get this is through the nose so the first one.
I hope they're able to eradicate this as fast as possible, don't want them to end up like Florida.

Do not go to Louisiana.
Imagine how terrible it would be if anybody in Louisiana had a brain to eat
Drinking it won't hurt you, it usually comes from a splash going up your nasal cavity. So diving in water or a slip n slide make sense I guess
oops late on that

What happens if you drink it and a little goes down the wrong pipe and then you choke and it goes up into your nose through your throat?

You're overthinking this.

Or if you take a bath?

I live in Louisiana :(
I've once watched some documentary about a boy having died because of unknown reasons, and it turned out to be this shit right here. I was pretty freaked out, I sure hope we're gonna find a well working cure eventually.
Yeah, while it has to get pretty far towards the back of the nose, its still horrifying. When its active, during the summer, it makes every single shower a nightmare. And then every single moment afterwards there is this little nagging sensation always going "What if?"
In order for transmission to occur the amoeba has to make direct contact with the olfactory nerve, which isn't really as easy as it seems
But I am a little freaked out because last week while taking a shower a little bit of water went right up my nose. And now I'm feeling slightly feverish, but not too much.
Sadly, this being labeled a rare disease, a better cure for it is not exactly high priority.

I can't imagine how freaky it would feel knowing that there's stuff in your shower that can eat your brain if it manages to get into the right place. Would turn me paranoid so props to you for having huge balls.

That's about it. Infection doesn't occur as often as people make it out to, but if it does you're pretty much fucked. There is a 1% chance or less for you to survive such an infection and when you contract it to boot, in all likelihood it might only be diagnosed post-mortem if people aren't specifically looking out for it.

I was just about to ask if this was the same thing that fucked Foreman up

They won't turn you into a zombie, but they will make you very dead.
After the tornadoes, typhoons and super-volcanoes, mother nature is trying to warn off the people of the United States once again that North America isn't meant for human presence.
