John Carmack has been talking about doing something "Rage"-oriented on the iPhone for quite awhile, and this year at QuakeCon he said that he wanted to have a "Rage" game out before 2010 ended. Well, he seems to have reached his goal, as id Software's new FPS has already slipped into the Australian App Store Store in both regular and HD versions and Carmack predicted that it would be on sale by Thursday.
"'Rage' mobile has been approved, it should be on the app store tomorrow morning," Carmack wrote this morning on his Twitter account.
The two versions of "Rage" come optimized for older iPhones and iPod touches or for the iPhone 4 and iPad. They also vary in size by about 200MB, which is to be expected. Right now, you'll have to be an Australia resident to find out how noticeable the difference in play experiences is, but tomorrow morning isn't all that far away, so the rest of the world should know soon enough. It does have a 12+ rating in Australia, though, so check with your parents first if you're younger than that and want to give it a whirl.
Developers are getting more and more ambitious these days with their iDevice graphics. "Rage" and Epic Games' "Infinity Blade" are definitely two going to be two of the highest profile experiments on the market when we've got them both to play around with. It is a great age for mobile gaming that we live in.
yEESSSSSSS
Wow motherfucker
So is this going to be a full game or just like a demo?
I wish this was released on PC looks like a fun game.

The engine seems to be nothing like the actual id5 engine. They do apparently have megatextures but they still have visible seams on level geometry, which doesn't make any sense. All lighting has got to be static, but then again I'm fairly sure that's how Rage is in the first place.
It's pretty impressive though.

I agree. I can't help but wonder if it stutters but the tech demos looked solid. They were also really nice for an iphone/ipad.
I hope it comes to Android. Although, I doubt it will.
I’m going to regret having “ios” in all my type names when I port Rage Mobile to Android.
:buddy:
God damn Carmack, is there anything he CAN'T do when it comes to coding?
Why would you want to play this on an iphone?
Everything about it would be ugly and wrong.
No android version?
Lame.
[editline]oh[/editline]
Nevermind, it's on the way! I need to read more.
It sucks that the minority is given priority, though.
Snip. Nevermind I was wrong.
I think the difference in gameplay in this and the PC version is the mobile version is more of an arcade type game where the goal is simply to get the highest score.
Hopefully the Android version does come out eventually.
Android is an open platform, so optimising the game would be a nightmare. Plus, it uses Java for software with Google's own VM, which isn't bad, but up until Android 2.2 there was no JIT (Just-In-Time Compilation), meaning everything runs much slower than it potentially could on 63.8% of android devices.
They could try and port the thing to Java and throw it out there for rich folk with Nexus Ones and other high-end phones, but then people with shit phones would buy it and get angry when they find that they shouldn't have.
Just ignore 'it'.
let's all give a nice thank you to carmack for being incredible
I heard about this earlier, but it had a different title and it was on rails.
It probably still is on rails, but maybe they just changed the title back to rage. It WAS this game, everything looks the same and it was set in the rage universe.
God damn, Carmack is fucking godlike.

Link?
I've been playing this quite a bit today - the HD version is amazing and the controls are really slick. Easily worth the asking price.
And once again I wonder.
WHY isn't this on the 3DS.
Especially since Nintendo are de-casualizing parts of the 3DS.
