University leaders outraged after vulgar signs greet incoming freshmen
The president of a Virginia college is “outraged” and has pledged action after several vulgar signs directed at incoming female students -- and their mothers -- were draped from the ledges of nearby off-campus houses.
“I said at my State of the University address that there is zero tolerance on this campus for sexual assault and sexual harassment,” Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick wrote in a Facebook post. “This incident will be reviewed immediately by those on campus empowered to do so. Any student found to have violated the code of conduct will be subject to disciplinary action.”
Broderick said at least one young student he talked to “thought seriously about going back home” after seeing the “offensive message.”
The bawdy banners were handwritten on what looked like large, white bed sheets and hung from porch ledges of private housing near the Norfolk campus.
“Rowdy and fun hope your baby girl is ready for a good time…”, “Freshman daughter drop off” and “Go ahead and drop off mom too…” were three of the signs captured in a picture posted to Facebook and preserved in a screengrab by the Huffington Post. The Facebook post has since been deleted.
ODU is one of the worst schools in Virginia, not even remotely surprised this happened there.
They should be booted from college and all money that they gave to the college seized by the institution and used for purchasing amenities.
“An incident occurred this weekend that does not reflect the university’s commitment to the prevention of sexual assault and dating violence,” the Facebook message said. “Not only do these actions taken by a few individuals undermine the countless efforts at Old Dominion University to prevent sexual assault, they are also unwelcoming, offensive and unacceptable.”
Sexual harassment, I guess, sexual assault? Are these people insinuating anything about rape? All they're insinuating is that the girl is likely to have a "good time" which can be, y'know, entirely consensual. It's pretty clear this is a - perhaps unwelcome - joke considering they wrote "drop off mom too..."

Yeah this one girl in the article actually considered going home. These deplorable excuses for human beings should obviously be fucked over (possibly for life) for these horrible acts of sexual innuendo.
What is it with Americans being completely unable to handle any sort of banter these days?

PC
This really isn't as bad as they made it out to be.
Sure, probably not the most appropriate thing to do but it's not suggesting anything illegal.
Oh my god a sexual joke how lewd we must go to defqon 1 immediately.
Yeah but these days everyone gets outraged when [del]anybody[/del] a person classified as one of the 'protected' groups~~ is remotely ~offended~.

The college seizes money from the college? :v:
This really isn't as bad as they made it out to be.
yeah it's pretty bad
pretty fucking degenerate
but im not surprised because that is what college is
Has nothing to do with PC and everything to do with common sense and some sense of civility
I think those students who considered going away are set to fail in life. The messages are not even remotely supported by the institution and in the real world you're forced to work with people you don't like all the damn time. If they can't adjust to realities like this and turn away whenever they get the least bit offended then I'm not sure what they can do in the workplace.
I mean it isn't illegal but show some fucking respect to freshman holy hell
Well can't say what the intentions are until the correct people are caught. If Virginia is a terrible place and you see it full of rapists and players, maybe setup those signs to warn people off and shed light on those people who you condemn of bad character. Can't completely tell until it's over.

I'm pretty sure if I pinned up a sign saying "Newly hired women drop off" in my cubicle I'd get fired tbh
USA, you have the freedom to be offended, god bless.
Hope our american FP pals don't go insane.
Yes but this isn't a cubicle in a business building, it says in the article that it was in a house near campus but isn't actually owned by the college.

probably also prohibited by local ordinances and if not I'm pretty sure "FRESHMAN DAUGHTER DROPOFF" banners lower my real estate value so yeah they can fuck right off
Probably doesn't help that fraternities have been given a bad rep as of late with the whole shitlord fratboy image they've managed to plaster over themselves. Still, seems excessive to punish them if it was outside the campus grounds but I can understand why.
college fraternities are terrible, no surprise there
ODU is ghetto as fuck. Don't go there.

I agree with you that they should fuck off. But I'm just saying that students shouldn't look at these messages and equate them to "hmm maybe I should fuck off myself" which is the mindset that some of these students have.
I think there should be some sort of administrative punishment. Not outright explusion, but if they did this as a fraternity they should have some sort of fine against them. I'm not a PC guy at all, but I think that the school has an interest in preventing freshman girls from feeling unsafe on their campus. I think we should do what we can to fight the college frat culture of "drink lots of beer and have sex with lots of vulnerable, stupid girls". I think college should be about education, not intimidating young girls
Plus, it misrepresents the frat. If a frat is supposed to be an organization of guys who want to make professional connections for later in life, that's what they should be advertising themselves as. When they hang banners like this, they're only recognizing that greek like is really just pay-for-friends-get-drunk-and-have-sex club. Frats should have to be held to higher standards by the administration to get any kind of recognition from the school.
college fraternities are terrible, no surprise there
a complete scapegoat
as if people outside frats are one iota different
as if people wouldn't do the same exact shit without frats

Would you feel welcome if you bought an apartment and when you went to the apartment draped across the entrance was "College boy bone zone"?

I've no experience in that, but honestly there's more than one college institution in any given place, and truthfully if I arrived to that kind of neighborhood for a four-year education I'd probably consider other options too
Then again I might also wait and see if the college does anything about it
Would you feel welcome if you bought an apartment and when you went to the apartment draped across the entrance was "College boy bone zone"?
:quagmire:
joking aside, I wouldn't exactly feel welcome but it's the feeling of being unwelcome that makes me stick it through.
Hell, why do you think I'm still on Facepunch? Not much room for welcome here for republicans or Christians.
I don't think the signs counts as a sexual asault
It was just a prank bro!

Yeah that would be blatant sexual harassment if anything remotely similar happened between employees.
