Sorry in advance if this is a bad thread or the wrong place to ask, as I barely come to this section, but how do you create a black and white animated "sketch" effect on a regular photo or image?
I wish to recreate this effect:

If you still don't get what I mean, here's a whole gallery of them: link
Basically what I am looking for is something like the last few frames in dgg's avatar:
Thanks in Advance!
You could individually apply a sketch filter to each frame of a gif as layers in Photoshop.
But I wouldn't be surprised if dgg actually drew his. The thicker lines in his animation kind of lead me to this conclusion.
Hmm... yeah maybe. When I change the image to black and white, skin color changes to grey (obviously) not white, and it still probably wouldn't create the animated effect.

Ok I just found out my phone has kinda the same camera effect:

It's called "Sketch"
[editline]08:00AM[/editline]
I would still prefer to do it in photoshop or something though. My phone has a bad camera.
That's pretty cool, actually
Pretty sure dgg drew that frame by frame.
DGG rotoscoped it by hand.
I know in Adobe Premiere you can output a video to individual JPG stills, then do a batch process via photoshop in which it systematically takes all of your stills and applies a filter to them.
a little lengthy of a process, but useful if you have a need for it.
So is there a filter on Photoshop/Premiere etc that has this effect I'm talking about? Or do I have to rotoscope it myself or something
Just trace the image by hand a few times and combine the results into a gif.
I don't think any effects will do the job this well.
Oh, okay.
I'll try that, although i'd really prefer just a quick and easy method though.
Thanks for your help!
Yeah, there is no fast and easy filter method to get it to look like it's actually drawn. I drew it frame for frame in Photoshop.
You can also use Flash, but that will create a more smooth effect since you only got a round and clean brush to work with instead of sketchy drawing brushes and pen pressure.
Uh, depends. Personally, if it's short, I'd just do it fame by frame in Flash, but if it's like a whole video or shit, I recommend dicking around in photoshop.
I was actually planning on working out a custom photoshop filter and using my method explained above to make a short test video. I'm not sure if I wanna do sketch, so much as maybe something like "A Scanner Darkly" or those Charles Schwab commercials.

I just checked out the trailer for a scanner darkly. Holy shit please do that.

This would be cool.
As far as I know the easiest way is to hop on After Effects and get some third-party video filters.
as far as I remember, a scanner darkly was entirely rotoscoped by hand, but I could be wrong.
I've managed to get a semi-vector-painted-ish look out of my filtering, it would look epic if animated.

That's just a filter? Sweeeeeet.
And yes, those movies are manually animated. (Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly, etc, not seen any of those yet)
Maan doing the shading on a scanner darkly mustve been a bitch in that case. Also, the top pic of those ones you showed dai, is just amazing.
the filter was attained using the tools available in the Topaz suite I've been offering as a prize for the contest.

It's like I'm watching a movie.
*Takes up the Coca Cola and pours it into a Tupperware cup whilst brushing his teeth with a Colgate brush and looks at his Rolex watch*
I've a similar thing with video, using a few different filters and effects. But nothing quite as authentic as DGG's.

I did a tutorial on it. It's on my YT channel, but it's rather... long. About 25 minutes, and I didn't produce it as well as my newer tuts.

This reminds me of the pictures from GTA 4, I was trying to achieve that effect a while back, but I had no clue how to use photoshop or anything similar to it.
making a test set with this. Took a video and I'm currently exporting all the frames to JPG so I can set up a batch-process that will no doubt run all friggin' night.
yay harddrive space

Overnight renders are always the way.
just finished. Looks cool, but I hate the video. recorded it in the office bathroom since the lights are bright in there and I wouldn't bother anyone, but it came out exceedingly yellow and when I'm trying to be quiet I sound like Michael Cera, which I hate. v:v:v
Nomatter, the look is really cool, though I'd prefer to test in better light. The yellow overlay of everything made my eyes blend in with my skin at times, which I was afraid of.
Now to try out some of the sketch-like stuff like this thread originally asked.
[editline]1:11[/editline]
I could just add a few tweaks to the batch process and the frames have no more yellow and contrast better. Oh well, too lazy.
looks damn sexy though

That did look cool, Anyway you could share with us? :-D
I suppose I could run everything through a pass again to make it look better. Give me a few minutes to run that, then a while for the youtube video to upload.

oh holy hell it rendered my effect like fifty bagillion times over on this frame

...I'll deal with all of this tomorrow. Need a different video.
