For Christmas I got a Fatal1ty Gaming Headset, hearing that it was quite good. A few weeks later the wire started to contract and coil up tightly, fraying at a couple of points. Two weeks ago I bound it up with electrical tape tightly which solved the coiling and without the coiling I thought there wouldn't be any wear on the coating. I was wrong. A few minutes ago the sound cut out, and the headset came loose, it had completely worn through, severing the wire.
Surely this sort of this shouldn't happen? Especially not to such a new headset. I think this would be covered in the warranty, but I need a serial number which was likely on the box, which I threw out just last week.
Does anybody know where to find the serial number? If not, what would you suggest I get instead? Something with a reliable wire preferably (And a mic) :argh:
Turns out wear of shitty materials isn't covered in the warranty. Looks like that's money down the drain.
Why don't you just cut the cord, strip it, and strip the small wires inside of it (probably 3), and wire it back together, then close it within more electrical tape. It's easy to do. I did it for 3 xbox controllers my cat chewed through.
It's been forever since I did anything practical with wiring, how would I go about reattaching the little wires? Just slam it all together until it might work? Or would I need to solder it or something?
Hm, there's four little wires, that's odd. Usually it's 2 or 3. Maybe it's just the inside of one of the wires split open and messed up. (Blue, green(? May be blue fibers), Red, White/gold fibers)
So I need to connect them to the other end of the same colour and melt them together. Right, I'll do it tomorrow if I can. Thanks.
Update, day later: Rewiring it didn't work. I tried it myself, taking care to get the right connections in the right places, but it didn't work. So my grandpa, who's very good at things like this tried and it didn't work after that either. It seems that either the internal wires are damaged in several points or inside the sheath, or they're fiber optic or something. Anyway, no chance of fixing it now so I suppose I'll just buy a better headset with a less flimsy wire.
No. What you do is Cut the wire where it's all messed up, then strip it. Inside should be 3 or 4 smaller wires, most likely color coded. Strip each of the small wires on each end of the cable, and then wire the corresponding ones together. I can help if you take pictures of where you are.
yeah you have to strip the out coating and get rid of / pull back the RF shield (looks like tin foil) then you have to strip the individual wires (probably 3 left and right audio and a mic wire but also possibly 4 if there's a ground)
the ghetto way to reattach them would be to strip about an inch of coating off each wire then twist em with there respective partners then cover the whole mess with electrical tape and shrink wrap but depending on if the wires are the lacquered type or not that might not work
the proper way to do it (if there lacquered they most likely are) would be to cut the wires about an inch above the break on both sides ( don't strip the wires the coating is meant to melt and re flow with heat) then get a soldering iron and flux and then tin the wires using the heat of the soldering iron only don't touch it to the wires lest you burn the small wires out (it will take longer and I would recommend the lowest temp solder you can find) after you have em soldered wrap the hole thing in electrical tape and then shrink wrap it (id shrink wrap the whole cord not just the section you fixed)

I also had problems with the Fatal1ty Mk II headset.
From what I see, the cord is designed to be a high-risk failure point. It's sealed in every possible area, so if something happens on the inside without the rubber tubing opening (which is very thin and can split open from an office chair wheel), you're pretty much screwed.
Luckily for you, the wire actually got cut, rubber tubing and all, so you should be able to strip them and then re-wire them by hand.
Mine got killed randomly when the sound felt like cutting out for no reason at all. The volume roller was all the way up, all the way down, nothing fixed it. And it died 1 day after the warranty from Newegg ended.
