I'm a little worried, I've just installed a new heatsink (The coolermaster hyper 212+) and my idle/load temps are very similar. Right now after around 30 minutes with prime95, it's at 65-66 degrees celcius. I added the thermal paste that came with the heatsink by putting a large dot in the middle of the CPU, then adding some extra around the edges of the CPU. Is this supposed to happen?
Oh, and I've overclocked it to 3.4 ghz right now
Thermal paste is tricky. Too much it will overheat and same goes for too little. I usually put a dot in the middle then spread it with a credit card edge. I also make sure it is even so it gets a even cool. I do know the hyper 212 is a great cooler and should be doing much better than that.
Yea, I didn't spread it. I currently have this: http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Performance-Thermal-Paste/dp/B0009PTBZ6
Should I get OCZ Freeze or maybe AS5? Which one?
Also, could airflow be a problem? How can I tell if something is blocking the cooler (there's nothing in the way, but my case isn't exactly the best)
OCZ Freeze
You put too much paste on. All you need to do is put a dot in the middle that's about as big as a small pea and put the heatsink on
I spread it out in an even and thin layers. However, this time I mixed two coolermaster thermal pastes together (The one provided by the CPU Cooler and another type that I bought separately), since I ran out. I spread it with a piece of plastic. I'm seeing no differences in temperature changes. Any ideas?
That's really strange. I have the 955BE stock clocked at 3.2 with a Cooler Master V8 and AS5 paste, and I'm only getting 30 Celsius. That's with the manual's instructions on applying paste with a rice grain sized dot on the CPU.
Sure would like the 212+, but it wouldn't fit.
