So, my desktop died on me recently and now I'm forced to use my MacBook to do all the stuff.
Sure, i though, no big of a deal, I've got all of the common programs i use on my MacBook.
Firefox, Blender, Skype etc.
Sure I can't play TF2 or any of the other games but sure I can stick to Roguelikes and Minecraft, right?
Oh yeah, about Minecraft, there are those mods I usually play with, got to install them.
"This mod is compiled with Java 1.6"
I've got 1.5, sure I can upgrade, right? Wrong.
Apple pulls a huge dickmove and it does NOT release JRE 1.6 for 10.5 OSX.
Instead they're trying to force me to get Snow Leopard. What if I'm fine with OS that's just 9 months old?
Why the fuck do they keep crippling their own OS? This is just fucking retarded.
Or you can just upgrade and not bitch. The solution is right in front of you. If you choose to not do it, nobody but you suffers.

Be reasonable.
You're telling him to upgrade to the new OS so he can play Minecraft.
Yeah, thanks for clarifying that :\

I'm sorry for not being your average Mac user and pay 30$ to be able to install mods for Minecraft.

Your car can be serviced by many, OSX cannot. Apple chooses what it will continue to support, your car manufacturer doesn't have the same walled-garden luxury. False analogy.
I am not saying their practice is right, I'm saying this is their practice. Deal with it or suffer. It affects nobody but you. You posted a rant thread, prepare for opinions, some in agreement, some otherwise.
It has more features than just Java 1.6
It has more features than just Java 1.6
The thing is, I don't want to pay 30$ for bunch of features if I only need ONE which should be available in the first place.
JRE 1.6 32-bit is available on every single platform except <10.6 OSX, because Apple felt like sucking that extra 30$ out of your average customer.

So you're saying that, the only way to fix your cars honk was to buy a new car, would be okay as long as that cars brand belonged to Apple?
[editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
Java is an essential packet, not letting users install JRE 1.6 on Leopard is like being forced to update to Windows 7 to play new flash games on Kongregate/Newgrounds/Armor Games.

9 months is nothing for an OS, especially since there's very subtle difference between 10.5 and 10.6
You can compare it to Vista and 7, Vista has support for DX11 just like 7.

How do you know it wasn't a technical reason they didn't include it? Maybe they couldn't get 1.6 running on 10.5?
Or you can just upgrade and not bitch. The solution is right in front of you. If you choose to not do it, nobody but you suffers.
He shouldn't have to upgrade to use a free fucking application...
you're kinda supposed to expect this when you buy/use an apple product :allears:
why would it even be apple's job to do this?
How do you know it wasn't a technical reason they didn't include it? Maybe they couldn't get 1.6 running on 10.5?
It's not.
If they couldn't get it to work then it just proves their technical incompetence, seeing as there's 1.6 on every other platform.
He shouldn't have to upgrade to use a free fucking application...
Unfortunately, that's not true: he does.
why would it even be apple's job to do this?
Emm, because they aren't letting anyone make anything for their platform?
How do you know it wasn't a technical reason they didn't include it? Maybe they couldn't get 1.6 running on 10.5?
There isn't. They just didn't release it. Solution: Upgrade. Apple does this to keep people on the latest version of the OS. If you're fine with old tech, you really don't have much right to complain about it becoming outdated.
Unfortunately, that's not true: he does.
There's difference between "doesn't have to" and "shouldn't have to".
Emm, because they aren't letting anyone make anything for their platform?
This changes in 10.7. Apple will no longer be including or maintaining Java support.

JRE 1.6 should work fine with 10.5, Apple just isn't releasing it so that they can strip an extra 30$ off of you.

That update says:
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 delivers improved reliability, security, and compatibility for Java SE 6, J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.7 and later.
This release updates Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_13, J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_19, and J2SE 1.4.2 to 1.4.2_21.
They're providing updates for Java 1.6, so there MUST be a way to get it.
I'm still using Tiger on my mac. Can't even connect to SMP servers, and the gameplay is slow and unplayable.

because that was so hard
This changes in 10.7. Apple will no longer be including or maintaining Java support.
I really hope you're making that up because it the most retarded thing I've heard this week.
There's difference between "doesn't have to" and "shouldn't have to".
Indeed there is.
