Things don’t sound good at Doom 4 developer Id Software. It’s no secret a bunch of the team has left for Oculus and that the latest Doom game has had a rough development. But an employee, writing on the website Glassdoor, makes it sound like the multiplayer beta you’ll get access to for buying Wolfenstein might not even be made by Id themselves.Glassdoor doesn’t seem to verify if people actually work at the company they write about, but gaming insider Superannutation said he believes it’s a legitimate employee account. Furthermore, the employees complaints match with a Kotaku report aboutDoom 4’s development. The game has been restarted several times and reportedly doesn’t even resemble a somewhat working game.
They probably don't give a shit at this point but I wonder if John and the rest of them felt any regret over Zenimax acquiring Id. It's the exact reason this happened in the first place.
No it's not. Id has been an internal mess since Quake 2.
As long as it's still a Doom game, I guess I don't really care. Just don't turn it into another pitch black jump scare game. Though after reading through Doom 4's development hell again a bit of skepticism about it has returned to me.
No it's not. Id has been an internal mess since Quake 2.
Yet they delivered Quake 3.
Kind of tough to continue a series when the people behind it have all left for something better.
Plus, DOOM is a product of it's era. Somethings just shouldn't be recreated or rebooted because the events, cultural, time period, and people that all converged to make something great are gone.
high-octane action shooters still exist and still thrive, but only as smaller budget games. A modern Doom can be made and can be made well, it just can't be made as a $60-$70 retail game with a AAA budget. Mainly because that ecosystem demands a different style of game from the higher ups and executives. It'd only work in a AAA budget if the execs understood exactly that Doom needs to be a high-octane action shooter, and why
All you would really need to do for a modern Doom remake is Aliens with demons. That's basically what the original was.
Even John Romero didn't like Doom 3. The situation with id makes me sad. They were once on the top, they were rock stars. Now Zenimax slaps the Bethesda logo on the box so id's games will actually sell.
As long as we're dreaming, I want another game with the style of Quake 1.
Wait, does anyone actually give a shit about the Doom franchise anymore?
Wait, does anyone actually give a shit about the Doom franchise anymore?
I do.
But just to see what's gonna come out as DooM after DooM3
Is it gonna be a showstopper? Or is it gonna flop?
I've long-wanted a sequel to Quake 1. As in, ignores Quake 2's story (Quake 2 and onward are set in a different universe), and retire the agreement long ago to never do a proper story sequel to Quake 1.
It'd be bad ass.
I wan Quake 1 or Quake 4 Sequel.
I haven't really played much of Doom 3, but I'm curious to see where they go in general after what was essentially Doom-Life. At least to me is seemed like they tried really hard to copy the feel of Half Life.

To be fair, Doom 3 was what ID initially wanted the first Doom to be like.
To be fair, Doom 3 was what ID initially wanted the first Doom to be like.
Slower paced, the most retarded flashlight mechanic in the history of gaming, 3 years long?
what?
To be fair, Doom 3 was what ID initially wanted the first Doom to be like.
Romero and Carmack designed the game around the idea of fast-paced, unbroken action. They hated the idea of any sort of prominent story in video games (Carmack likened it to story in porn), and they even fired Tom Hall because he wanted a game with story.

And Tom Hall still didn't want anything like Doom 3, he wanted Doom to be open world RPG-ish with lots of secret areas and collectable treasure and shit.
No it's not. Id has been an internal mess since Quake 2.
No they argued like they always did since quake 2, since Willits gained veto and firing power, arguing turned into "insubordination" and "sabotage" instead of discussion, which is why people are leaving in herds and they haven't had a non-schizophrenically game developed since.
And Tom Hall still didn't want anything like Doom 3, he wanted Doom to be open world RPG-ish with lots of secret areas and collectable treasure and shit.
Yeah. Reading Hall's Doom Bible was really cool. IT would be neat to see a finished product based on it.
Everything about this games development is just making me want to avoid it more and more.
It sucks how a great franchise has ended up like this.
eh crap I Pre - Orderd Woflenstein for this ( well I was going to get Wolfenstein new anyways)
Okay look in context it might not have made much sense but why do people keep knocking the way the flashlight worked? It's pretty clear on what they were aiming for.
The ability to see or the ability to defend yourself in near total darkness.
The original idea for the Sector 4 level of Alpha Labs where you're in the staging area for the EFR system was to give the player a choice of either going through some platforming with the risk of instant death and make it to the end of the level quicker, or take a much longer and near pitch black route (though safer by comparison I guess). In the end they had the factory area lit up regardless of what you did, but this whole thing with the flashlight is just ridiculous. It worked pretty damn well as a gameplay element.
well seeing it's a 100 year's in the future it was kind of dumb not to have some helmet flashlight. or nightvison maybe there was a scenario where you all the shit was lost or broken after some huge demon came in and the only working thing was a normal flashlight it would have been fine.
I'm worried that Doom 4 could be id's last game before shutting down. Rage wasn't a big success and we only hear bad news about Doom, and not to mention all important people have already left.
Yet they delivered Quake 3.
After Carmack forced everyone to scrap the game they were already developing because he thought multiplayer only was the future of gaming.
I'm worried that Doom 4 could be id's last game before shutting down. Rage wasn't a big success and we only hear bad news about Doom, and not to mention all important people have already left.
well let's see how Wolfenstein does.
well let's see how Wolfenstein does.
id has nothing to do with The New Order other than the game being based on an id franchise.
Slower paced, the most retarded flashlight mechanic in the history of gaming, 3 years long?
what?
iirc the flashlight thing was originally a technical limitation
In a way it doesn't matter how wolfenstein does.
id, the company where _____ works and makes games like ______, is gone, period.
Even if DooM and Wolfenstein do amazing, id is no longer the company that made DooM ]I[, much less Quake X or anything else. That company and it's employee work ethic/personality doesn't exist anymore.
Id may continue to be a good company or turn things around, but the id that people grew up with simply ceased to exist. It's sad, but not really unexpected, given what modern gaming has become.
I'm worried that Doom 4 could be id's last game before shutting down. Rage wasn't a big success and we only hear bad news about Doom, and not to mention all important people have already left.
On one hand Id is a name that a lot of publishers would be extremely hesitant to let go of, even if the name is the only thing left that's worth anything. But on the other hand, Zenimax doesn't seem to be making any effort to challenge the widely accepted idea that Id is dying/dead.
The new Shadow Warrior is what Doom 4 should aspire to be like. Just less Japanese.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I'd like to see a sequel to Doom 3 more than a sequel to Doom 1 and 2. I thought Doom 3 was a great game and had a lot going for it, and if they were to do some things differently in the sequel it would turn out really well.
Though I can't say I trust them to make a very good game regardless of what it's a sequel to.

You can mix elements of Doom 3 / Playstation Doom / Doom 64 for the creepiness and still get some fun gameplay without over-relying on monster closets, jump scares, and repeated, necessary flashlight swapping (even if Doom 3 was balanced around it). Part of it's game design with enemies, weapons, and AI, and part of it's level design; you have to strike a balance that melds together well.
