This is a thread for Folk music, really just anything that fits in here, freak folk, experimental folk, psychedelic folk, indie folk, etc. Examples: and of course the unavoidable neutral milk hotel
Love me some folk rock (also does folk metal count?)
personally id say no, but if the others want it i guess you can?
Thing is.. "Folk" is a ridiculously broad term. Because you could be talking about Traditional Folk and then you'll run into all sorts of problems. :v: But since we're all sane here, we'll settle with the Bob Dylans and the indies. [editline]30th June 2012[/editline]
personally id say no
You ain't the boss of me. :) [editline]30th June 2012[/editline] what the OP is looking for is Indie Folk: [editline]30th June 2012[/editline]
freak folk
well on reading this:
going to norway on monday burned out a few cds, mainly folk :v:
One of the stranger things I've come across, Dark Folk Ambinet or something
No Folk Punk? Poor show people.
People don't realise it but folk is the most broad term in music out of them all.
I for one love happy upbeat folk [editline]30th June 2012[/editline] even though the lyrics are about murder or something, those Kazoos just make it
When you mentioned folkmetal i knew youd post finntroll first.
Was gonna post Korpiklaani but since Finntroll have a acoustic album I went for that first :v:
their best acoustic is Galgasång.
This band really deserves more attention, it's folk punk, but with an apocalyptic feel to it. And I don't really consider 'folk metal' to be a form of folk, I think it's just a gimmick in music.
Scottish Folk is the best kind of folk IMO.
Oh and I'm completely forgetting about two of my favourite female singers.
Some really good freak folk (I think? Not really sure what qualifies something as freak folk) using found instruments and just in general some really unique sounds.
And I don't really consider 'folk metal' to be a form of folk, I think it's just a gimmick in music.
Well, Folk metal is an add-on genre, like Symphonic metal so it's sorta true (Is also why you see those two so commonly combined). Black Metal bands seems to be the guys who are overdoing at the moment. closest to purest folk metal I can think of is Heidevolk
No Folk Punk? time to exploit the broadness of this term (^uploader made a mistake, it's from the album "have Moicy" by Michael Hurley, The Unholy Modal Rounders, Jeffrey Frederick, & The Clamtones) [editline]30th June 2012[/editline]
Here's a playlist that ranges from Pre-1960's folk to present day. Over 6 hours long. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE4CD01135C1A4639
Portuguese folk metal? :v:
this is probably pushing what defines folk but idc
time to exploit the broadness of this term
Ah The Incredible String Band. They have beautiful songs. Also you want 60's protest songs? No? Well have a normal folk song with protest undertones by one of the greatest protest singers then. Such a wonderful tune.
The singer from Of Montreal is making solo indie folk.
indie folk
if I said "indie" folk wasn't true folk music, you people would hurt me wouldn't you? :( [editline]1st July 2012[/editline] reason being, is that the "indie" characteristics were built out of a glorified imagination and not so much traditional roots. I look at the lyrical content of Fleet Foxes, a LOT differently than I would say a Joni Mitchell record. Reason being, that the Fleet Foxes kind of want to create this "positive" world, and is a bit surreal as compared to the realism portrayed in Joni's records.
This is not really folk but its 60s folk-inspired music so why not have some Tim Buckley. I've been listening to him a lot recently, he's got a brilliant voice, is the father of fellow musician Jeff Buckley (who these days is probably better known) and is a musical genius, in my opinion. And have an awesome psychedellic jazz tune thing by him, This guy is pretty underrated, and a very versatile musician! (Ak'z you need to get his stuff if you don't have it already.)
I really, really love folk. Mostly neofolk, though. I need folk to be melancholic, mostly acoustic. Here are a few bands that I thoroughly enjoy. Rome Vàli - heartbraking and truly beautiful instrumental neofolk, one of the most beautiful sounding bands I've heard In Gowan Ring - they've got some really great melancholic pieces, has a little medieval vibe to it. and lastly - Agalloch, they're not pure folk though, they're folk tinted with black metal and vice versa. I think I really lack the words to express my love and passion for this genre, great music for wandering through the wilderness or just sitting at home and doing whatever. There are a lot more of these bands, but that'd really stretch the page. One last thing - every single one of you folk lovers should check out the collaboration album "Whom The Moon A Nightsong Sings" , it has over 20 neofolk/atmospheric songs from various awesome artists (including Nest, Ulver, Tenhi, Vàli and Empyrium). The album really is the essence of this music, it's pure beauty.
yeah neofolk really is great. Try Death in June and Current 93.
