The Canadian pop singer removed the image but only after it had been tweeted to his 51.1 million followers and attracted 660,000 likes on Instagram. Bieber, who earlier in the week made a trip to the less politically combustible Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, later said he had been unaware of the shrine's controversial role, and issued an apology. "While in Japan I asked my driver to pull over for which I saw a beautiful shrine," he wrote on Instagram. "I was mislead to think the shrines were only a place of prayer. To anyone I have offended I am extremely sorry. I love you China and I love you Japan." China and South Korea regard Yasukuni, which honours leaders executed for war crimes among 2.5 million Japanese war dead, as a potent symbol of Japanese militarism. Pilgrimages by Japanese politicians provoke angry outbursts from China, which sees the visits as evidence of Tokyo's failure to atone for atrocities committed on the Asian mainland, including in parts of China, in the 1930s and 40s. Bieber's "impromptu" stop at Yasukuni came a day after 150 Japanese MPs paid homage at the shrine. Earlier in the week, the prime minister, Shinzo Abe, sent a ritual offering but stopped short of visiting in person, in an apparent attempt toavoid controversy on the eve of Barack Obama's arrival in Tokyo. One Instagram photo showed Bieber, dressed in a white baseball cap, long hoodie and boots, standing in front of the shrine next to an unidentified person who has his head bowed. The caption reads: "Thank you for your blessings." In another, the 20-year-old's hands are clasped together in prayer as he stands beside a shrine employee in religious robes. The posts prompted a flurry of comment online. "Hey Justin, do u even know where that is?" wrote Instagram user vivien—kong. "Yasukuni shrine is the place where to worship the Japanese WWII soldiers. And do u have any efing idea that how the Japanese Nazi killed American and other Asian countries innocents?" Others were more critical. "Maybe you are a giant in Japan and thats the reason why you like Japan," a Chinese user commented. "Anyway, please dont come to China forever, we really dont like stupid people." Another pleaded with him to remove the image.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/23/justin-bieber-apologises-yasukuni-war-shrine-tokyo-photograph Lawl he just can't catch a break
kawaii
Why is this offensive?
ouch, that kinda sucks.
Why is it wrong to have a shrine dedicated to dead soldiers I'm sure many of them were good people Im not a big Justin Bieber fan but i think thats ridiculous but i don't really know much about this
Can't really fault Biebs for this one, practically anyone could've made that mistake.
Why is this offensive?

China and South Korea regard Yasukuni, which honours leaders executed for war crimes among 2.5 million Japanese war dead, as a potent symbol of Japanese militarism.
It's Japan being a dick to the rest of the world.

Did you even read anything in this thread? Really confused about some of your posts and it is quite painful to read.
I wonder if that gang of friends that live in justin biebers house are still there and mooching off of him; I hear they enable the fuck out of him drug wise
Going to have to sympathize with Bieber on this one.
Why is this offensive?
It's a shrine dedicated to war crimes. It'd be like praying at Hitler's grave or something.
Why is this offensive?
*snip, some sort of lag induced double post with broken merge. GG Forums.
Why is this offensive?
This is why I want bad reading back. It's stated why in the article. But I do think it's an honest mistake on his part. If you didn't know better, you'd think it was just a really cool, elaborate shrine (which it does look like).
-sniped- What. Did you even read anything in this thread? Really confused about some of your posts and it is quite painful to read.
I'm pretty sure Sindri is satire.
It's a shrine dedicated to war crimes. It'd be like praying at Hitler's grave or something.
Saying that it is 'dedicated to war crimes' is a little off the mark.
It was founded by Emperor Meiji to commemorate individuals who had died in service of the Empire of Japan during the Meiji Restoration.

The shrine's purpose has been expanded over the years; the deities enshrined at the Honden shrine within Yasukuni currently include more than 2,466,000 individuals who died in conflicts spanning from the Boshin War of 1868 to the end of World War II, and the adjacent Chinreisha "spirit-pacifying" shrine commemorates all of the dead from all wars fought worldwide throughout history. The shrine also includes a war museum, Yushukan, which contains various artifacts and documents concerning Japanese war casualties and military activity from the start of the Meiji Restoration to the end of World War II. Controversies and political tension have arisen due to the enshrinement at Yasukuni of over 1,000 war criminals, including 14 "Class A" war criminals, from World War II and the shrine's historical revisionism, and intensified following visits by senior government officials such as prime ministers Yasuhiro Nakasone, Ryutaro Hashimoto, Junichiro Koizumi, and Shinzo Abe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasukuni_Shrine Looks like people taking offence way too easily.
It's a shrine dedicated to war crimes. It'd be like praying at Hitler's grave or something.
From Wikipedia: "(Former bekkaku-kanpeisha) Dedicated to Those who lost their lives while serving Japan" All soldiers deserve respect. Bieber didn't do anything wrong, he just paid his respect to the dead soldiers.
Why is this offensive?
probably the post "thank you for your blessings" next to the photo
Man, Canadians have an awesome reputation in Japan. I swear to god Beiber, if you fuck that up on us....
[t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bl5Vx3fCEAArIdV.jpg:large[/t] he looks like such a wannabe in this image :U
Man, Canadians have an awesome reputation in Japan. I swear to god Beiber, if you fuck that up on us....
It's not the Japanese who are butthurt, though.
What I want to know is, why is there a massive shrine dedicated to a bunch of war criminals in the middle of Tokyo? You'd reckon they'd have knocked it down or something by now, why have a massive, expensive and space-wasting (especially in Tokyo) shrine that literally everybody hates?
[t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bl5Vx3fCEAArIdV.jpg:large[/t] he looks like such a wannabe in this image :U
shit man baseball caps aren't too flattering to him.
From Wikipedia: "(Former bekkaku-kanpeisha) Dedicated to Those who lost their lives while serving Japan" All soldiers deserve respect. Bieber didn't do anything wrong, he just paid his respect to the dead soldiers.
Yeah I just looked up the shrine on wikipedia that's why I thought it was just dedicated to soldiers that lost their life but if it's dedicated to war crimes then I definitely understand but I don't think its right to yell at Bieber for that maybe he only read the wikipedia article like me or maybe he just simply thought the building looked nice I wouldve made the same mistake
i don't get it, are we not supposed to agree that the Japanese soldiers gave their lives for their country, despite some doing despicable deeds (allies were hardly innocent of war-crimes) deserve veneration?
Yeah I just looked up the shrine on wikipedia that's why I thought it was just dedicated to soldiers that lost their life but if it's dedicated to war crimes then I definitely understand but I don't think its right to yell at Bieber for that maybe he only read the wikipedia article like me or maybe he just simply thought the building looked nice I wouldve made the same mistake

probably the post "thank you for your blessings" next to the photo

[t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bl5Vx3fCEAArIdV.jpg:large[/t] he looks like such a wannabe in this image :U
tbh It looks like he's being respectful. It would grind my gears if he was standing there doing something like this -
Man people are assholes, JB is just paying his respects and is not posing all "yoloswag" by some soldiers grave. People want to hate him for any reason, he could give food to homeless or donate to charity and people would still throw a shitfit
You'd reckon they'd have knocked it down or something by now, why have a massive, expensive and space-wasting (especially in Tokyo) shrine that literally everybody hates?

why have a massive, expensive and space-wasting (especially in Tokyo) shrine
Yeah, fuck history. Let's destroy that opressive slavery-minded Roman art, let's destroy the discriminative Abrahamic scriptures and so on. And while we're at it, let's destroy all monuments, statues, the vatican. They're just a waste of space.
that literally everybody hates?
Speak for yourself.
well to be honest, anyone could have made that mistake.
