Demonstrators also demanded the release of the jailed members of the punk band Pussy Riot. Mr Putin introduced legislation in June that increased fines for breaking laws governing protest. Saturday's demonstration was approved by the authorities and thousands of police lined the route. The BBC's Daniel Sandford in Moscow says this is the sixth big march there in less than a year, and while not as numerous as some others, it shows the mood against Mr Putin is still strong in the city. Marching through the city, demonstrators shouted "Russia without Putin", and "free our political prisoners". Some activists carried balloons with balaclava masks painted on in support of Pussy Riot, who wear the headgear when they are performing. Three of the band's members were convicted of hooliganism and jailed for two years in August after staging an anti-Putin protest in a Moscow cathedral in February. Their sentence was criticised by the US, UK and EU as being "disproportionate". 'Crooks and thieves' Addressing the crowd, prominent opponent Alexei Navalny urged protesters to keep up the pressure on the authorites. "We must come to rallies to win freedom for ourselves and our children, to defend our human dignity," he told a cheering crowd. Another opposition leader, Boris Nemtsov, said many people disagreed with the way Mr Putin and his party were running the country. "We came to say a definite 'No' to the crooks and thieves. We came to do everything to stop repression. We came to do everything to have new, fair elections," he said. Mr Putin has taken a tough line against the opposition since he began a third term as president this year. He approved legislation increasing fines for those who violate protest laws in June. Anyone participating in an unsanctioned rally, or damaging property during a sanctioned rally risks a fine of about $10,000 (£6,440).
But why? Mr. Putin is a darling of the people, look at the numbers! I mean, how else could he have received 105% of the vote?
But why? Mr. Putin is a darling of the people, look at the numbers! I mean, how else could he have received 105% of the vote?
He was putin to office by illegitimate means
And then OMON shows up, the march is dispersed, and the leaders disappear
I wonder how long the protest will last. Moscow is known for it's brutal anti protest doctrines.
But why? Mr. Putin is a darling of the people, look at the numbers! I mean, how else could he have received 105% of the vote?
People are starting to lose faith in him, 105% may seem impressive but that's down almost 40% from the previous election.
I can't help but feel like this is lost cause, and at this point I don't see them succeeding without violence, unfortunately. Putin just doesn't care.

I'm sorry. But if they deployed those dogs when napoelon or hitler invaded, the invasion would stop to cuddle them. They just pacify aggression.

if countries are fighting to be more like the USA/Europe/South Korea/anycapitalistfirstworldfreedomlovingeaglemanthing; then what are we progressing towards?
if countries are fighting to be more like the USA/Europe/South Korea/anycapitalistfirstworldfreedomlovingeaglemanthing; then what are we progressing towards?
A capitalistfirstworldfreedomlovingeaglemanthing: But that's really an issue with modern politics. With no obvious thing to strive for, we've sort of turned on each other over domestic issues. Our issues have become more abstract, and so our politics has suffered. It's still preferable to what you find in nations like Russia or Mexico, though.
Next week he'll ride a horse while carrying a gun or something and facepunch will love him again
if countries are fighting to be more like the USA/Europe/South Korea/anycapitalistfirstworldfreedomlovingeaglemanthing; then what are we progressing towards?
They are protesting to be what we are supposed to be, not what we are.
We're close enough, they are protesting to be able to freely express most things without fear of persecution, which we can do; atleast that is Pussy Riot's expression from the video.
inb4 bloody sunday
free pussy riot, thanks in advance
I loved how they were hanging from the roof.
Unless they take over over the parliament this'll blow over in no time...
Within a day OMON are going to come in and remove them is my best guess.
