How do I do this? Can I just use my headset microphone and bring my computer to my drum set and experiment with some placment, or do I have to buy a fancy ass camera\mic?
Buy a high quality USB microphone I suggest http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Blue+Microphones+-+Snowball+USB+Microphone/9737381.p?skuId=9737381&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=9737381&ref=06&loc=01&id=1218164386127
I'd say get a camera and record from over top, so the sound isn't all coming towards the camera.
Stupid10er's idea is good, My favorite youtube cover drummer uses that camera method (he's my favourite because, good player, good video sound, and good camera angle)... I've seen some people record with camera's behind them on an angle, hiding the snare or crash or whatever.
if you want a proper studio quality recording you will need to buy a few condenser and dynamic mics to place on each drum and cymbal
Yeah, some proper miking would be best. Maybe two condensers above the kit, so they can get the cymbals, and a dynamic mic on every skin. I realize that this is probably out of your scope. Tip: don't use anything expensive where your stick is likely to hit it.
Placing microphones on all your cymbals and drums is the best method but if you can't afford it, a simple camera over the top like stupid10er said is as good as you're going to get.
Rock Band mic put it near the snare
