St Elijah's stood on a hill near the northern city of Mosul for 1,400 years. But analysts said the images, obtained by the Associated Press, suggested it had been demolished in late 2014, soon after IS seized the city. A Catholic priest from Mosul warned that its Christian history was "being barbarically levelled". "We see it as an attempt to expel us from Iraq, eliminating and finishing our existence in this land," said Father Paul Thabit Habib, who now lives in Kurdish-administered Irbil. St Elijah's Monastery, or Deir Mar Elia, was believed to have been constructed by Assyrian monks in the late 6th Century. It was later claimed by a Chaldean Catholic order. In 1743, its monks were given an ultimatum by Persian forces to convert to Islam. They refused and as many as 150 were massacred. Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.
Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.
Because ISIS said they would kill anyone who calls them Daesh, so now everyone calls them Daesh to spite them
Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.

Daesh, an adapted acronym of their Arabic name - Dawlat al-Islamiyah f'al-Iraq w Belaad al-Sham - is similar to another Arabic word - das - which means 'to trample down' or 'crush', which could therefore be the source of their dislike.
http://i100.independent.co.uk/article/why-isis-will-hate-it-if-we-start-calling-them-daesh--bkC822p_zl
Wow, they didn't just destroy it, they destroyed the fuck out of it. It's fucking powder
Destroying history, what a bunch of twats.
Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.
1) Because we do not recognise them as a legitimate state, therefore, in my mind, it would be incorrect to call them ISIS 2) They don't like it
Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.
ISIS recruitment method is based on islamophobia. If they represent the general islamic people (by the name IS =Islamic State) it would benefit them. Daesh was their main origin name.
They'll just rebuild it once isis is ash and dust
They'll just rebuild it once isis is ash and dust
Perhaps, but it will never be the same.
Can we go kick the death cult in the teeth yet? You'd think more world governments would be really worried about this sort of thing, but nobody seems to care and it is the strangest thing.
1) Because we do not recognise them as a legitimate state, therefore, in my mind, it would be incorrect to call them ISIS 2) They don't like it
They are a legitimate state though.
Can we go kick the death cult in the teeth yet? You'd think more world governments would be really worried about this sort of thing, but nobody seems to care and it is the strangest thing.
Maybe it's in their interest... maybe.. who knows..
Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.
"Because we, Facepunch, are going to hurt their FEELINGS".
They are a legitimate state though.
If they are a legitimate state, my living room is an legitimate state.
If they are a legitimate state, my living room is an legitimate state.
Are you beheading people in your living room?
I was trying to be "sarcastic", you cannot be more wrong to call Daesh a legitimate state. They are a group of radicals.
Religion destroying religion.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Perhaps, but it will never be the same.
Meh, many of todays old buildings have been rebuilt multiple times.
I hope there is LIDAR data of this. [editline]20th January 2016[/editline]
Meh, many of todays old buildings have been rebuilt multiple times.
That's not the point of his post though??????
Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.
This is, and has always been, Isis: [IMG_THUMB]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ec/Isis.svg/2000px-Isis.svg.png[/IMG_THUMB] Depending on the crowd you're with, this is also Isis, but it has more to do with the above Isis: [IMG_THUMB]http://cdn.thedailybeast.com/content/dailybeast/articles/2014/10/10/archer-drops-isis-the-fx-series-dumps-the-spy-org-s-name-in-light-of-recent-events/jcr:content/image.crop.800.500.jpg/47101139.cached.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] The group you're referencing goes by the names Daesh, ISIL, and IS. And then, technically speaking, the terrorist group exists beyond Iraq and Syria, so ISIS is wrong anyways.
Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.
Because as much as Facepunch says they hate slacktivists, they love petty feel-good slacktivist nonsense like this.
Because as much as Facepunch says they hate slacktivists, they love petty feel-good slacktivist nonsense like this.
Yeah, right? Can you imagine how many ISIS members are reading this thread and becoming furious at the title? There's no need for it here. On BBC news, maybe, not not on bloody Facepunch lol we're not that special
Can we go kick the death cult in the teeth yet? You'd think more world governments would be really worried about this sort of thing, but nobody seems to care and it is the strangest thing.
I think compared to the hundreds of people these people have just outright slaughtered, destroying older buildings really isn't as important. This is coming from a lover of history, too. As important as historical sites are, the lives of those living in the present have more importance. [editline]20th January 2016[/editline]
Daesh was their main origin name.
No, it wasn't. It's another name in a very long list of names this group has had. Here's a list of names: Group of Monotheism and Jihad 1999-2004 Organization of Jihad's Base in Mesopotamia aka Al-Qaeda In Iraq (AQI) 2004-2006/7 Islamic State of Iraq (Often still referred to as AQI) 2006/7-2013 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant/Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIL/ISIS/Daesh) 2013-2014 Islamic State 2014-Present
Not a good time for Christians in the Middle East. If there's anyone we should be taking as refugees, we should be taking religious minorities (Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, etc)
Why call it Daesh, its ISIS.
I always thought that this was kinda funny. It really just seems kinda silly
I prefer to call them IS.
After about a dozen threads of people throwing a fit at me for using "DAESH" in the title, to the point where a thread would just get derailed about it (like this one) I just say "Islamic State" anymore.
Despite all this uproar over ancient buildings being destroyed and western hostages executed I was more infuriated upon learning of the systematic genocide of the Yazidis through mass murder and rape. I hope these fucking animals with their twisted ideals, manipulative and hypocritically bloodthirsty approaches that make the dark ages seem pleasant are picked apart by the carrion eaters.
