Well after applying the thermal paste the 8800GT still runs hot. I think that since its idle, isn't 75C a WAY too hot temperature if it is idiling? Should I RMA it or get a cooler?
I have the same problem with 8600 GTS SSC edition
You applied thermal paste to a GPU? I thought that was only for CPU's.
Have you turned the fan speed up?
It's supposed to run hot leave it.
Turn fan speed up, tidy up the case.

Any 2 metal surfaces that need better thermal conductivity. I put some on my northbridge's heatsink to keep it cool.

Hmmm....interesting.
You should never take heatsinks off GPU's to just change paste, what you need to do is undo the metal tin casing and clean inside the heatsink area
It's a little hot but it depends on some factors like what it was before, how warm it is in the room right now, etc.
is there any dust in it?
video cards run hot. especially if you have vista (dunno if you do).
it's fine. they are a different kind of chip than a CPU and they can take higher temperatures.
using thermal paste on the stock airblock is a bad idea though. the ram chips and voltage regulators don't make a snug fit and need thermal *pads* to fill that void properly.
It's not like it's going to kill it but i noticed this after i took the aftermarket heatsink off my 8800GT so i could try SLI with a friend who had another one.
@SassyCheese 75 is rather warm, especially idling
My case has awful airflow and my 8800GT idles at 45-55 (depending on the room temp) and the highest I've ever seen it go under load was 85, and that was when it was boiling weather
@OP what were temps before you reapplied the paste, were they higher or lower than now

Huh? The GTX 260M in my laptop idles at 41, I'm running 7.
That's a laptop.
My 4870 idles at 65c, i think you're fine.

Those GPU's have nothing to do with a 8800gt his is running a little hot.

Didn't change a thing at all still at 75C idle.
Dust?
Dust is killer trust me.
If that is not the problem, you have likely applied the thermal paste incorrectly, applying too much or something.
I have that card and it idles at 55C.
My 9500GT (probably not any better than an 8800GT) idles around 50-51C. On load it hits 74C.
What the hell is going on with your GPUs guys?
Mine is idling at 35C and goes up to a maximum of 50C when running Furmark....
Are we talking core temps or speedfan temps? Speedfan temps are way off, it says my 8800GT idles at 75c+ while if i open rivatuner it tells me the core temp is actually 55c or so .
That's fine I have the same card, so does my brother and my friend and we all have the same temp.

CPUID Hardware Monitor temps, is what I'm talking.

I've wondered about that kind of thing, GPU-Z reports two "GPU Temperatures" of 67C and 59C... no idea which one is right. HWMonitor reports the 67C one, and Rivatuner the 59C one.
(This is an 8800GT)
