Sorry if the title is different from what I type, but I can't think of anything else. If it's misleading in anyway, let me re-embellish my point. I just discovered the site last.fm a few weeks ago, (I live under the boulder called dial-up, this was at a friends house). It's great, being able to listen to an amazing variety of bands with such ease. Now, I try to listen to every style of music, save for a few genres, (Namely 'gansta' rap and country). I don't splurt my opinions of how a band is lame, shitty, horrid, or anything. If I have negative opinions that I feel I must express, I try as hard as I might to express them in a logical, practical manner, much like you would with constructive criticism. Now, here's where I get frustrated. I'll use my earlier example of last.fm. There are literally people who, for whatever reason, make it their mission to bash an entire genre of music and praise their favorite. I don't claim that I only listen to the best kind of music or anything like that, but goddamn, no one does. Just because you listen to your bision of superior music doesn't make you badass or anything. I listen to music because it sounds good to me. I try not to care what other people think of it, but this is just goddamn ridiculous lately. This has been going on forever, but I'm only recently really noticing how much it happens. Take the band 'Scary Kids Scaring Kids'. Not good music to most people I'd assume, but I actually enjoy it. However, their comment board on last.fm is riddled with people bashing them. For example:
Scary Kids sucking dicks

this band sucks =\
What does this achieve? What do these people get by saying this? Does their penis grow or something? From the occurrence rate of this kind of thing I should think so. Even here on Facepunch I see this happen, (I'm not saying that I wouldn't expect it). Again, I hope I don't seem like a douche myself if I've worded this wrong, but I really have a problem with this type of thing. Don't get me wrong, I fully support personal opinion, and I'm not trying to say that people shouldn't be entitled to their own. It's different when people state their opinions as fact. I fully expect a troll or two when I post this, but if you agree with me I'd love to here you. If you disagree, I'd also love to hear your side of the argument, not just, "no yur musik is gey".
What, people are not allowed to express their opinion nowadays? If I dislike a band/movie/game, I'll say that I dislike a band/movie/game, I don't see where the problem is. [editline]11:33AM[/editline] People going "your music sucks, listen to better music" are a completely different story though.
I'm fine with people having a different opinion on music as long as they give legit reasons for thinking what they do.
People are entitled to their own opinion on whatever it is If they can provide a decent argument than you have no right to say they cannot argue their point
As I said in the OP, I fully understand people having their own opinions. But just randomly blurting out that a band sucks isn't opinion. They make it sound as if it's fact and as if it'll somehow affect someone else's opinions. EDIT: Above poster, I don't know whether you're debating my post or not, but I agree with you. if someone has a credible point to their argument, then I'm fine with it.

You're more dissing the people who listen to the band rather than the actual music, (Besides saying 'beating a dead horse, which I don't really understand). Musical stereotypes are another thing that I fucking hate, I won't get into that. I could say that all metalheads smell bad, that people that listen to techno are gay, and listening to emo music makes you cut yourself, but it's simply not true in my experience. I listen to all three genres, and I don't fit into any of those generalizations. I also listen to Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and I'm not 'hipster' whatever the fuck that means anymore. My contention was that hipsters listened to the music that was popular rather than what sounds good.
SKSK isn't popular any more? i must be that out of the loop with mainstream music then
I don't know if they are or not, I'm not really concerned with the fact.

One thing I can't stand is people who say "they listen to a bit of everything" as if, it's just the pop crap that's in the charts they listen to I really wish people like that had more diverse underground tastes
I listen to Hunab - Ku Underground enough. And when people say "this band sucks!" its always in thier opinion, fucking live with it.
My friends have massively different tastes in music to me. Doesn't bother either party.
Tell me about it. I listen to classical music...ONLY. Nothing else at all, and I am not afraid of telling it to people either (some people who do like classical music simply doesn't state it if people ask what music they like because they are afraid of being neglected). I get a lot of criticism, and I like being in a minority of classical music lovers, mainly because it's way less stupid people who listen to it. No offense, it's just my current age group who are stupid, not saying everyone who listens to rock or pop are stupid.
I think not being able to appreciate modern music is just as ignorant as not being able to appreciate classical music.
I'm fine with people having a different opinion on music as long as they give legit reasons for thinking what they do.
But isn't music subjective though?
I think not being able to appreciate modern music is just as ignorant as not being able to appreciate classical music.
So should I lie saying that I like modern music?

I often hear this, so I'll give them Black Metal or Deathrock (neither openly liked by usual "mainstream" listeners) and they'll say "This is stupid, it sucks, etc." I then say "I thought you listened to everything?" My question is usualy returned with silence.
What confuses me is that all the popular crap that is played constantly on the radio, the radio DJs actually enjoy? Honestly do they just hire ignorant people who only like already popular music to radio DJ.
What confuses me is that all the popular crap that is played constantly on the radio, the radio DJs actually enjoy? As to your second question, they play what is requested, and what is popular at the time. Any other time, all I hear are 80's Pop songs.
If someone gives a reason for their dislike of a genre I don't mind. I'm a metalhead, and what annoys the HELL out of me is when people think every single metal band is some grindcore satanic shit that revolves around heavy bass with no tune and bashing on the drums with no real rhythm whatsoever. Goddamn it pisses me off, it's the fucking epitome of ignorance. And the fact that people make that judgement even though they've hard incredibly little or no metal AT ALL is even worse. They don't even make the smallest attempt to see what metal sounds like.
So should I lie saying that I like modern music?
No, not really, but I think if you looked hard enough, you should find that you like some modern music, just like most metalheads should be able to enjoy some classical music.
No, not really, but I think if you looked hard enough, you should find that you like some modern music, just like most metalheads should be able to enjoy some classical music.
bach started metal

I am now addictde to Pergamum. The most awesome instrumental metal I've ever heard.
Scary Kids Scaring Kids is a terrible bandname, so that "scary kids sucking dicks" comment is very justified
They stole the name from a Cap'n Jazz song >:|
Scary Kids sucking dicks
I lol'ed.
Now, I try to listen to every style of music, save for a few genres, (Namely 'gansta' rap and country).
God you are such a cliche

And they ruined the piece. Electric guitar sounds so bad, especially when playing classical music. I am fine with it being played on an acoustic though.
