U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and wife used government plane to get eclipse view: watchdog
A government watchdog is accusing U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin of using a government plane to secure a good view of Monday’s eclipse.
It’s the second time this week Mnuchin and his wife, Louise Linton, are under scrutiny for their travels – after an Instagram post from Linton listing the designer clothing she wore on the plane was widely criticized.
The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) have alleged that the couple planned a trip using a government plane specifically to secure a view of the eclipse on Monday.
[...]
“In a response to a comment on the post, Ms. Linton snapped back in a post highly critical of the commenter and defended her lavish lifestyle and the government-paid trip,” CREW wrote in the request for information.
The post showed the newlywed couple getting off the government plane, and mentioned several of the designer labels she was wearing, including Tom Ford and Hermes.
The public post, which has since been deleted, received instant criticism by users, who slammed Linton for bragging about her wealth and using a government plane.
But it was Linton’s reply to user Jenni Miller, who had commented, “Glad we could pay for your little getaway #deplorable,” that drew the most criticism.
“Cute! Aw!!! Did you think this was a personal trip?! Adorable!” Linton wrote. “Do you think the US govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! Lololol. Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country?”
God damn that post reeks of narcissism and self importance.
Wow, not even trying to be humble or to play it down.
"deep down you're really nice and so am I"
Idk mate, I just don't think you know what the word nice means.

She's sacrificed so much for the country, like those $2000 shoes she bought a while back. She couldn't decide between those or the $1800 ones, but she was proud of being an American, so she bought the more expensive ones to help the American economy and trickle her wealth down to the peasantry below. Incredibly generous! You don't know how often she's sacrificed her income to buy designer clothes. It's a real sacrifice for a real American.

She tagged her scarf's brand in the photo.

I mean sales tax is a percentage after all, she paid as much as you to get those $2000 shoes as you would on anything else worth $2000. She's not wrong about contributing much more, but that doesn't give her an excuse for being a cunt about it, nor does it actually validate her using the plane for personal use, if she did at all.

I don't think you can measure sacrifice through absolute amount of dollars given. Sacrifice implies giving up an important part of yourself or your possessions for the sake of others. A poor family giving away a substantial part of their groceries to a food bank would be a bigger sacrifice than some rich dude spending a relatively meagre portion of his income on some gucci shoes' sale tax.

The beggar giving her last two coins is worth more than the rich man's tithe.

Aw ;) what the heck did you just say about me, you cutie?! I'll have you know I'm in the top 1% of taxpayers in the US, I've been involved in numerous personal sacrifices for this country and I've paid over $300,000 confirmed income tax
Not surprising. The man is one of Donald Trump's accomplices, after all.
Her post can basically be summed up as "We're rich so we can do what we want, you're poor so you can't, fuck you."
The apology is out!

How about fuck the apology and actually punish her for misappropriating taxpayer dollars. I'm sure that has to be legally protected somehow.
[...] she has applied to volunteer at a homelessness center in Washington.
Which she will stop volunteering at in a month or two after the story dies down. After all--!
“I see the irony of making an apology in a ball gown” but that social functions and fundraisers will remain a part of her life.
-- the show must go on! To Broadway! In a $30,000 gown! Courtesy of tax payers' money!
Meanwhile, I'm putting my money on her having hired some PR scrubber firm to clean up her image and has presently set them to 'get the press off me ASAP so I can get back to doing my thing please'.
Whew good thing Trump drained the swamp and replaced it with such fine people

Only took two weeks. Seems sincere to me.

Shh, don't ask questions, just keep voting Republican and they'll eventually turn the clock back to the 1950s when good Christian men had jobs, their good Christian women were in the kitchen, and gays kept quiet and committed suicide later in life like respectable deviants. #MAGA
At the very least her apology was well worded, graceful, and respectful. She didn't double down and showed plenty of humility for her actions. I feel it's important that this be recognized and applauded, as such civility is the exception, rather than the rule, in our current government.

That's kinda the issue though. This is something that shouldn't be the exception. It should be expected. The fact that Trump's administration has normalized this sort of thing so much is horrifying.
