Engagement and Wedding Rings - Would you Build, Buy, or Design?

As time goes on, many people have started to question the purpose of marriage, and namely the purpose of purchasing two sets of manufactured rings to "show your love" for your significant other. Stuff like this has always been odd to me for the same reason I do not see the purpose in purchasing flowers from a store when you can instead take the person you love out to a nearby field, and enjoy a nice picnic date, as well as pick some flowers with them, and enjoy your time together. That last thing got me thinking though... If you and your significant other can go about enjoying hobbies like picking flowers together, watching movies together, or going fishing/hunting together... What about making rings together?
It hit me like a goddamn brick, and this concept has stuck with me since I was about fifteen. I have made the decision that if I was ever to attempt to marry a girl that I love and care about, that I would actually go about proving my love for her. My first goal would be making a pair of engagement rings, as a symbol of, "Lets get married!" and this would start with me going about to local rock and mineral stores or local thrift markets, and purchase things like silver. From this, I would goto a local river and attempt to pan and sift for fine gemstones and possibly iron. Of course, my reason for this is to find decorative gem stones that I would put into the base of the ring which I'd make from silver and possibly gold.
For example, here in North Dakota we have things like Agate and Opal which make for amazing rings!

With a little knowledge in metal work, some time, and a buffing wheel, you can make amazing rings that would not only be unique, but they would prove to your significant other that you actually give a shit about them enough to go about and make them something like an engagement ring.
But wait! What about a wedding ring..? We cannot simply forget about the pair of wedding rings!
Well I got an idea for that! As you can imagine, once you are engaged with someone, you are going to spend all this time and money preparing for some lavish and expensive wedding, and you know what I think about that? Fuck that. I think this over-the-top wedding garbage needs to go out the window, and the true symbolism of marriage should be done with a couple actually taking the money that would be used for a wedding, and using it to go on a state, country, or worldwide adventure in which the couple will go around harvesting resources from the land. Spending time panning for gold, looking for gemstones in mountainsides, going about recycling old metal materials in scrapyards in order to reproduce something beautiful and gorgeous. This would allow for the couple to spend time as an engage group, in which is going about forming memories and a bond that'll last for a life time. No truer test of a relationship can be found when you are camping next to a river in say Alaska, panning for gold.
Maybe you want to cut down a small tree with a pair of hatchets in order to use the wood to build a workshop which you'll use to harvest materials from the land to build your rings:

The possibilities are endless and are only limited to the couple's willingness to go on an adventure, and do away with the traditional marriage, and instead do a marriage which encompasses them forming a true loving bond, and forging memories that'll come together with a gorgeous piece of jewelry that'll be a statement of how strong their relationship is.
This is my belief though! I have come to ask Facepunch what they believe, and what they would like to do in terms of getting married!
Keep it simple.

Wait, are you getting engaged?

Oh god. This reminds me.
In my uni it's common to have "marriages" within the student population. It's basically an informal thing where "couples" get assigned "kids" (incoming freshers) to take care of.
One of my friends went all out. He dressed in black tie, had a bouquet of flowers, went on one knee in the middle of the high street and gave a speech and everything. A huge crowd gathered round, and I'm pretty sure all of them thought it was legit until he pulled out the ring. It was a fucking onion ring from Burger King. Everyone died laughing right then.
He and his "wife" got free food from Itsu too.
I don't see anything wrong with buying rings from whatever jeweler. People just look for things to criticize in society.

Nah, I just want to see what the general consensus on Facepunch is.

Its not really so much criticism, as it is an alternative concept to it. Most people go over the top with weddings, like $3000 to $30000 weddings because its gotta be the best moment in their lives, and I feel that something like that could be better spent on either getting a house or doing an adventure like this.
