Michigan’s minimum wage could go up to $9.50 an hour if supporters of a ballot proposal get their petition language approved and can collect more than 258,000 signatures.
The Raise Michigan coalition, which supports an increased minimum wage — Michigan’s is currently $7.40 an hour — submitted the petition language to the Secretary of State Monday.
The new Michigan wage would be phased in over three years and would be indexed for inflation.
It also would raise wages of tip workers — like waitresses and bartenders — who are now paid $2.65 per hour, at a rate of $.85 cents per year until it reaches $9.50.
Where do I sign?

That's awful.

Tips cover the rest, and I believe if they don't make enough from the tips then the business is required to cover the difference.
So not really.
Meanwhile minimum wage was raised to $11 an hour in Ontario.
Today is a good day.

I'm not sure about Michigan, but usually if you don't make minimum wage with tips, your employer has to make up for it. Also, in most cases, I think waitresses and bartenders make a lot more than minimum with tips.
Either way, it's still pretty bullshit that employers can use tips as a cop out to not pay their workers a decent wage.

I don't think they're required to. I'm pretty sure in the last bout of this conversation it was "they could" but "they don't" because it costs the business money and golly who wants to pay their employees?
Btw the link doesn't seem to be working.

Waiters in top restaurants (Here in Argentina, at least) must make a shitload of money. More than college-level jobs I believe.
To give you an idea, whenever I go to the Rosa Negra or "The Gardiner" here in Argentina, I see tourists tipping the waiters with FOREIGN money. Some US folks left 20 bucks for the guy. You know how much that is here? 240 pesos, and that was in a 2 hour window, plus another table, the guy nets around 350-400 pesos.
In one night (4-5 hours) 800-1000 pesos. That´s 1/8 of what the typical single middle class man here in Argentina earns...

I know a girl who works at a whole in the wall restaurant and some weeks her paychecks wouldn't even cover gas. One week she literally got a $5 paycheck.

In Texas they were required to pay the difference if it didn't add up to minimum wage.
I don't know about any place else.
The trick is, that if you find yourself in the position of having your employer make up that difference on a regular basis, you won't be working there long.
I've always felt the low wage for tip earners was demeaning. Basically requiring the person to beg for their wage on a daily basis. But that's just my opinion on it.
-edit
My wife and I always over tip, even if the service was rotten, because the job itself is awful.
The whole thing with waitressing is it pretty much comes down to the customers are obligated to tip so that the waitresses can make a decent wage. Meanwhile the restaurant owners get mad if the waitresses don't get enough from tips even though they're the ones screwing over their employees and their customers simultaneously.

Yea but that doesn't happen like that. My mom and my aunt have a combined over 40 years in waitressing and half the places won't cover.
That doesn't mean that it won't be profitable. There are often times when you can walk home with upwards of 100$ in your pocket. There are weeks when you'll make 50$. It's variable and can be unreliable.
Further some places take part of the tip if it makes a certain amount. I always make sure that 100% of the tip goes to the workers before I consider how much I'm tipping. I always like to tip high because I think the product needs to go to the worker, not to the bosses or the company or business.
And fucking podunk, backwards Indiana is sticking to $7.25...
WOO I live in Michigan
Too bad I can't work
I urge all you fellow Michiganders to sign this petition if it gets passed around.
I make below this rate because I'm an unskilled student and I like my job, and as it stands unemployment is still shit and leaving a job is a gamble still here. I think I ought to get paid a fair wage for my work, but we don't get that. This doesn't just affect minimum wage workers, it will affect workers close to minimum wage, which is alot of the economy, and beyond that it's the largest and most vital part of the economy- the entry level positions. This would be a great jumpstart to young people as well as local economies.
I know this is a little off topic, but I think it's cool how many Michigan FP posters we have here.

The bar at the restaurant I used to work at once got over 2000 dollars in tips for like 3 hours of work

Minimum wage is 10.25 here, should be 15.00
employers should be force to provide befints not based on the 40 hours a week - but based on how many hours a week your employees work, if a person workd 20 hour sa week for you then you must provide a 50% benefit of that of a full time worker. you can raise the minumum wage all you want, they will just hire people for less hours each and fill it in with 2 part time instead of 1 full time. They should be required to provide a partail benefit to each worker based on a 40 hour work week so they cant weasel out of it like the scum theyve been acting like for the last 50 years.
Oh boy.
I'm all for this.

And the best part? It's not taxable here!

Yeah, woo. From Indiana as well and working on minimum wage. Hoosier and proud.
This makes me so happy, I got a 50c raise over minimum not too long ago, I can't wait to make $10 an hour

i find the tipping culture so strange. it's really circular. people have terrible wages, so everybody tips. why not just have better wages and less tipping?
i find the tipping culture so strange. it's really circular. people have terrible wages, so everybody tips. why not just have better wages and less tipping?
Tipping is a concept created and propogated by restaurant owners who want their operating costs to be lowered by having customers basically pay the employees wage.
In the right setting tips can be a great thing but most of the time its just a business decision by the owner.

That means you can buy almost a gallon of gas in Norway every hour you work.
