(shamelessly robbed off Wikipedia) Cameo is a funk-influenced R&B group that was formed in the early 1970s. Cameo was initially a 13-member group known as the New York City Players; this name was later changed to Cameo to avoid a lawsuit from The Ohio Players, another group from that era. Since then, Cameo has recorded several hits records. As of 2009, some of the original members continue to perform together, while two others were hired by the hip hop group Outkast. Cameo have always been one of my favorite bands simply becuase their songs work really well in a party, and because they are bloody brilliant. Some of you probably recoginse some of their songs by listening to them, such as Candy (from GTA San Andreas) and Word Up! which is their most popular song, which is often played everywhere. (I would post the actual music vids, but VEVO is a bitch for embedding) Candy: Word Up (12"" version) Most if not all of Cameos music videos are fucking weird (In a way only a 1980s video can be) but that said, they are pretty damn cool to watch and often hilarious, a few famous actors appear in their vids, including a young Lawrence fishbourne in "Attack me with your Love" (Morpheus from The Matrix) and Levarre Burton (Geordie Laforge) in "Word Up" The lead singer Larry Blackmon is the heart of the band, he is also one of the most eccentric characters from the 1980s. Sporting a high flat top, tash and red cod-piece. Only in the 80s could a man pull so many women looking like that. Cameo have also been covered and sampled by a shit-ton of bands:Word Up! was covered by Nu metal band KoЯn on their Greatest Hits, Volume 1, Scottish rock band Gun, German "Country Trash Punk Rock"-Band The BossHoss, Melanie B, Electronic pop alliance These Stains Is Us and Romanian rock band Voltaj under the name "Hai sus!" (Get up!) Yeah I raised my eyebrow at that German band too.
