Hello there i'm looking into upgrading my pc, and i want you guys to help me figure out the smartest solution. I don't game all that much, and it's not demanding games that i play. What i do, do is edit movies and such. I also want to surf the internet and run multiple programs at once fluently.
These are my current specs, some of wich i will keep:
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.120503-2030)
Motherboard: NFORCE 650i Ultra
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
HDD: Samsung HD501LJ SCSI 500gb
Case: Nzxt Lexa blackline
I want you to help me check if the hardware will be compatible with each other, and also if i'm causing bottlenecking.
This is the hardware i'm considering so far:
Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
Cpu: Core i3 I3-2100 3 MB (Intel Boxed)
HDD: Kingston HyperX 3K 120 GB (actually it's an ssd)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 2 x 8 GB
Also, i'm considering installing Windows 8 on this new system, i know it's in development but will software be compatible with it, like After Effects.
try go with the asrock z77 extreme4 and an intel ivy bridge processor
if video editing will be its main use, I suggest a mac (We all know how crap they are but I had to do a research task one them once and they aren't that bad if you're not a gamer).
if not, something simple like..
cpu: Intel i5+ (i5,i7 or amd's octo core fx-8120)
ram: 8gb ddr3
gpu: Nvidia gefore gtx 920+

What? Ok first of all a FX chip is a bad recommendation, and that graphics card wont exist for several years, if at all.
CPU: an I5 Ivy bridge
Mobo: Asus Z77
Ram: Corsair dominator memory (8 gb)
GPU: an XFX Radeon 7950 (you can flash it to an 7970)
This is one of the best setups you can get for now.
I didn't really consider buying a graphics card, do you think that is necessary?
Get a 3770k if you are using it for video work.

So you recommend i change the motherboard and processor and then just go with the initial setup. What is the point of changing the motherboard just so i know. And also some of these builds get a little too expensive for my taste, is there a cheaper alternative or what? And is it really necessary to get dominator memory compared to vengeance? I know you guys probably think i'm stupid, but what the heck.

no one thinks you are stupid.
if you were to go with an ivy bridge processor e.g the i5 3570k or i5 3770k you would need an ivy bridge compatible motherboard. these are the Z77 boards.
if you want to go with z68 instead because of cost then I strongly recommend the i5 2500k. that should do what you need it to do, but for video editing a Z77 board and ivy bridge processor are better by a decent margin. the i5 2500K is still a very powerful CPU though and you can over clock it through the roof with a good CPU cooler
if you are on a tight budget you should post it and some of the guys here can probably sort you out. you should also tell us more about your video editing. how intensive is it?

Thank you very much for this response, it helped me out alot. And i'm glad that you guys take your time to respond to me. And i think it might be a good idea to use the extra money and get the good package.
Well i'm not really on a tight budget, i can afford the stuff so far, but i just don't plan on upgrading it that much. And my video editing involves using After Effects alot, and usng a lot of effects and such.
But i'm wondering what's the difference between Vengeance and Dominator memory? :)
I'm not really sure but I read that dominator memory is supposed to be better if you were to overclock its speeds and fiddle with its voltages. personally I would go with Vengeance on the basis that everyone seems to go with Vengeance. I have a corsair vengeance 2x4gb 1600mhz kit myself and it definitely performs
also if you are going to go with an ivy bridge CPU then I would suggest you opt for a newer video card. not sure how the 9800GT would hold up with a processor that fast

Why are you posting the PC Building section? This is not to discourage you, your posts are hilarious.

what the fuck is this post
Pick up an Intel Ivy Bridge as someone said earlier in the thread.
Also, if you can afford it, I highly recommend the Geforce GTX 570. I have one and I work with HD video and do intensive gaming every day with no complaints regarding the graphics card.
I've never thrown an application at it that it couldn't handle at best settings.

Macs definitely do make for good media editing/streaming rigs, but OP wants to install Win8, so Macs are out of the question.

Yes mac's are good for that, you can do the same thing on a windows computer, while saving money.
Thank you soo much guys, i just have one last thing. Will all of the stuff below fit together, and am i missing anything?
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Core i7 I7-3770K 8 MB (Intel Boxed) (Varmeafleder)
Corsair Vengeance 2 x 8 GB
Inno3D GeForce GTX 570 (1.25 GB)
Kingston HyperX 3K Upgrade Bundle Kit 120 GB
Lexa Blackline
I just want to make sure, this is my first time to upgrade.
Whats ur PSU type and wattage?
I think it's 500 watts 230v 4a 50hertz. I don't know if that is the information you need, but i didn't really want to open my case. But i'll do it if necessary.

500 Watt is to low for that setup. I'll suggest you'll get an Corsair 750 PSU

no
500W is fine if it's not a POSU, OP can you give us a brand or model

That's some pretty high amperage on the 3.3 and 5V rails.
Anyhow, it seems that it lacks active PFC, and that is pretty much a sign of bad quality. I also read that it turned off when a 16A load on the 12V was applied (that's how much I got out a german review anyway). I would get a new one.
Soo basically i'm buying a new pc. Except i'm using the same casing, that's the only thing that survived.
But how much of a performance increase would this upgrade mean?
