I'd say Michael Jackson, The Beatles and Elvis. What about you?
What do you mean 'Modern Music"?
Everything from 2000 onwards back to the 50's and maybe 40's and everything to come from then The Beatles, full stop
What do you mean 'Modern Music"?
I'm saying from the 40's or 50's onwards.
Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Ray Charles, Buddy Holly,
Kraftwerk
Bob Dylan, Queen [editline]21st December 2010[/editline]
Everything from 2000 onwards back to the 50's and maybe 40's and everything to come from then
So? 1940s onwards? What about Billie Holiday?
Kraftwerk
lol, no [editline]21st December 2010[/editline]
Bob Dylan, Queen [editline]21st December 2010[/editline] So? 1940s onwards? What about Billie Holiday?
never heard of him until now It was just a basic outline
never heard of him until now
:barf:
deal with it, not everyone listens to jazz [editline]21st December 2010[/editline] oh lawd it's a woman, how embarrassing obligatory self dumb rating
probably dub a lot of electronic and new punkish music wouldn't be the same [editline]20th December 2010[/editline]
lol, no
uh are you kidding me? kraftwerk's minimalist sound and synthesizer usage was incredibly important for modern music i doubt electronica would have existed today at all without kraftwerk
So all electro artists are influencial on the same level as the legends... To be honest, if you talked on the level of Autechre greatness then I'd be on board.
lol, no
... I'm not sure what to say... I don't think you're serious.

Fair enough. Trans europe express was legendary , forgot that :3:
Seeing the popularity of metal currently, I'd be inclined to nominate Black Sabbath and Metallica as two of the most influential artists.
currently? metal has always been extremely popular in the underground
In my humble and retarded musical opinion I'd say modern music was heavily influence by the music that came before it. No need to thank my stellar deductive reasoning I'll be here all day :science:
The very first examples of "modern" (i.e, non-classical) music were the blues songs sung by african slaves working on american plantations.
As CoolCorky said, the origin of afro-carribean culture music comes from the spirituals sung by plantation workers. Elvis was obviously a huge contributor to the popularity of that scene though, with his white features making it more accessible to a less liberal audience. Although I've heard that the only reason the studio ever let Elvis hang around to record his music was because he could score them Benny. It's quite interesting, how if Elvis didn't have access to Benzedrine, we may have had a completely different musical landscape.
Definitely The Beatles
What exactly was it that made Beatles so influencal? It's the standard answer for these kind of threads. But really, what did they do? "They changed music forever" - how so? Sure, by being the best selling band ever you will automatically influence alot of people. Got any concrete points to bring up? The funny thing is that people say that the band was the most influencal of all times, but yet everyone says they have a unique style that has remained unmatched for 50 years. Isn't that a bit contradictable? I think it's worth discussing. I'm not trying to start a fight and I'm not saying that Beatles weren't influencal.
I think the Beatles were influential because they brought a real creativity to the popular music scene. They were pretty much the first British band to be big internationally, making way for the 'British invasion'. Also with their more psychadelic tracks, they did a lot for the hippie subculture and the beliefs of that culture.
Interesting point.
Yeah, I mean, I personally am not a fan of the Beatles, but I guess if we brits hadn't been shown we could make it, we wouldn't have bands like Motorhead or Def Leppard.

Psychadelic rock evolved into progressive rock in the late '60s. Progressive rock acts slowly became more radio-friendly/pop in the '80s also most people say there's never been anything like the beatles because beatles fanatics usually class music as "BEATLES" or "NOT BEATLES"
I am.
The band Free, they have been a huge influense to the rock/pop culture.
Meshuggah I suppose in metal. Well as you can see with all the new djent bands.
