• Best GFX Card for about $300-400 AUD. Upgrade from the 8800GT.

I haven't understood that whole technical thing about GFX cards. Which would benefit me the most in that price range? There is a chance that I could save up to about $500AUD. I've been thinking about the 5850 or the 5870, but the latter is so expensive in Australia. Even the 5850 is pricey. I would prefer it to play the reasonable modern games at max everything (maybe low AA). I say reasonable because I'm excluding GTAIV and Crysis and games alike because they seem to be poorly optimized. Specs, Q6600 @ 3GHz 4GB DDR2 800 (might upgrade these) 600W Thermaltake PSU Playing at 1680x1050
For that price, a GTX 280 or a 5870. [editline]10:33AM[/editline] Dig a bit deeper and you might find a better deal though.
What exactly would that better deal be? It would be very hard for me to even get to $500. But I still want to see my options.
I mean look around and you might find a good deal at a local hardware store for those cards.

4GB ram is fine (for now) I'd get the 5870 but the 8800GT still kicks ass (especially when you volt mod -> OC it).
no
:psyduck: I'm failing to see why the 8800 GT isn't a good card here.
:psyduck: I'm failing to see why the 8800 GT isn't a good card here.
Because the 5850 makes the 8800GT look like a kid drawing with crayons.
:psyduck: I'm failing to see why the 8800 GT isn't a good card here.
your telling me the op should get a 8800GT over a 5850/70
your telling me the op should get a 8800GT over a 5850/70
He already has one.
So what guys, which cards would be the best for $400 and $500 dollars?
buy a 5850 and oc it
buy a 5850 and oc it
Do this. I love my 5850, and it's easy to overclock it to 5870 speeds.
Forgive me for being silly, but does over clocking it to the same speed means exactly the same performance? Or would I have to OC it a little further to match the performance.
Forgive me for being silly, but does over clocking it to the same speed means exactly the same performance? And moving on up from an 8800GT is a good call, right now, those are "Reccomended" card's for games, like bioshock 2 and mass effect 2, I ran bioshock 2 with my computer which is: pentium 4 dual core 3ghz 8800GT (512MB) 1gb RAM <-- fail i know, 5 year old computer and it SUCKS, it's laggy, slow, looks horrible, even on high wtf BUT Maybe it's just bioshock 2 because Mass Effect 2 reccomends 8800GT, and it runs awesome on... well i dont really know because the you can't really change many settings... But just WAIT and SAVE money, wait for the Nvidia 300 series lmao, or just get a gtx 200-whatever, i really think Nvidia has a better product over ATI (MY OPINION, DON'T FLAME PL0X) EDIT: My res. is 1280x1024

It might be better (depending on the OP's budget) to get a second 8800GT and SLI them.
I'd rather not swap my motherboard and stuff. Having 2 GFX cards sounds like a pain in the ass to maintain.
I'd rather not swap my motherboard and stuff. Having 2 GFX cards sounds like a pain in the ass to maintain.
Not really... you just add the second card, and close the case...
Not really... you just add the second card, and close the case...
The concern would be lack of mobo compatibility with SLI.
For all the people saying get a 5870, in Australia that is out of his budget. I haven't seen a store who sells them for less than $500. As mentioned earlier, get a 5850 and OC it. They're usually around $400.
Sometimes the 5850 goes for $375, and you can OC it to be almost exactly like the 5870.
The concern would be lack of mobo compatibility with SLI.
That seems pretty rare, since every motherboard has had at least dual pcie x16 slots for a few years now.
It isn't rare considering my PC is about 4 years old.
It isn't rare considering my PC is about 4 years old.
Prebuilt shitbox, or custom build?
It's prebuilt at the parts I selected. I didn't need SLI at the time, nor did I intend to use it in the future. Slightly regret that decison.
Well you might want to future-proof your next rig.
I just saw a GTX 295 sell for $400 brand new on eBay. Oh wait, you are in Aussie monies!
