So it's still an XCOM game? I hope they did something about it having pretty much nothing in common with the other games in the series other than the name and general idea. I'm fine with it being an FPS spin-off, but i don't like how it wasn't a worldwide XCOM.
Houston control room?
"refined their vision, and as a result the game has evolved into a high-stakes narrative experience imbued with core XCOM concepts."
This I'm okay with, they had me worried the narrative would be thrown out for it to be just like Enemy Unknown.
Leaving it named XCOM is perfectly fine. Warhammer kept the name when they went for the thirdperson shooter/hack and slash approach.

Any fan of the Warhammer franchise would've expected it to be a strategy game if they had no way of knowing otherwise due to all of the previous Warhammer games. Why couldn't they call this game XCOM: Revelations or some crap and it'd be fine there? :v

The XCOM name is only associated with the genre.

It would be cool if that situation room comes in at a later point in the game when the Bureau gets their shit together, it'd be cool to see the evolution of bases being hastily set up command centres to being full men in black kinda deal.
Because every Warhammer game before Space Marine was an rts, right?
Unless there are Warhammer PC games outside of Dawn of War that I don't know about, then yes. Not referring to the old board game and stuff.
Unless there are Warhammer PC games outside of Dawn of War that I don't know about, then yes. Not referring to the old board game and stuff.
Why only PC? There's stuff like Fire Warrior, Space hulk, few others.
I don't see the evolution from the screenshot. Still looks like what we saw: x-com prequel where they just decided there were fighting aliens before the aliens came and USA:The Strong of Earth will defeat them. Maybe they will just take x-com out from the name.
Why only PC? There's stuff like Fire Warrior, Space hulk, few others.
Fire Warrior is for PC too, and Space Hulk is a board game. I rather not keep this discussion up in an XCOM thread though.
I must admit, it would have been quite cool to have a game set in the same universe as another game of a different genre, and instead of having its name it could just say something like "part of the XCOM universe" or something.
*Cough* *Cough* Enforcer *Cough* Cough*
Show me one person who thinks of that game when they hear "XCOM".
Honestly, what I think would be good is to call it The Bureau, and have it deal with alien attacks throughout the U.S. Throughout the game, have mentions of other similar agencies fighting in other countries and parts of the world against attacks in their respective areas. Then at the end of the game, when everyone is battered and bruised and have just managed to stop whatever is going on, have it show all these different agencies meeting with the U.N. and basically say that this is what leads them to start the XCOM project. Which would actually work in the realm of the XCOM games, since if a country or region becomes dissatisfied they leave. It would be utterly idiotic unless for some reason they thought they could handle themselves. So if they had previously used their own agency for fighting aliens, they'd have reason to think "We can do this without them."

It'd make sense if they decided to delay it to maybe work on the story and see if the new EU established itself well in the community.
Show me one person who thinks of that game when they hear "XCOM".
Show me one person who thought of a Third Person Shooter when they heard W40k before Spess Mahreen was announced.

In my opinion it's a welcome spin-off that is not really slowing the series down or taking it in an unwelcome direction, considering games typical of what we're used to are still being released.

Start out as an agent sent in to investigate, then get your hastily-assembled mission hub, then upgrade it into an actual headquarters with science and industry and all the things that allow for an organisation like XCOM to combat the invaders.

It is implied that humanity knew about aliens prior to the older X-Com games, and in the intro to XCOM they seem more curious about the aliens rather than the fact that there are aliens. I mean why would there even be an XCOM if they didn't have previous experiences with extra terrestrials?
