It’s no secret the official Facebook for Android app could use a bit of a facelift after years of ducking and dodging design guidelines. First murmurings of a redesign spawned months ago after several users noticed they were treated to a new user interface, but it seemed to be a server-side switch that Facebook controlled. Many are often whisked back to the old user interface after seeing a single glimpse.

But it looks like Facebook is finally getting a move on getting the UI to everyone, as they have enabled it by default for anyone who is signed up to be an alpha tester for the app. You’re likely salivating at the chance to use the new user interface, so let’s cut to the chase on what you need to do:
If you’re not part of the beta group, you can skip to step 3.
If you’re part of the beta group, you’ll need to leave it. Do so by heading to the Facebook Beta Group here, and selecting to leave the group.
Once you are no longer part of the beta group, you’ll need to sign up for the alpha group. Do so by heading to the Facebook Alpha Group here, and selecting Join Group.
Once you’re confirmed to be in the alpha group, you should be able to go to to the Play Store on your phone and install the latest alpha version of Facebook over your existing
installation.
Your app might have problems launching at this point. Simply go into the app’s settings (Settings > Applications > Find Facebook) and clear cache and data. You will be logged out of
Facebook so make sure you remember your password.
From there you should be treated to an awesome new user interface, featuring flat iconography and swiping gestures to make Facebook for Android feel more “at home.” It isn’t full-on
#HOLOYOLO, but we’ll take anything we can get at this point.
From experience, you run a risk when joining the alpha pipeline, a lot of important stuff breaks and takes a few hours for them to push out a patch

This is what the newsfeed looks like, looks the same in terms of contact viewing but holy hell it's so much faster

Well shit, it's about time, what happened to the android lovin' Facebook?
It would also be about time for Valve to scratch their ass and fix their horrible Android Steam app as well.

To be honest, I don't think it's any better than the iOS version, I just don't like the look of it on iOS.
I uninstalled the facebook app long ago. It is so fucking annoying so I just use the mobile version in my phone's browser. I usually keep 3g off and if I turn it on, every god damn message from the past week pops up as if it were new and freezes my phone because for whatever reason, the facebook app can't figure out that I've already seen the notifications on my pc.
There's still some issues, like searching still uses the old style but they could improve that soon, it's still in alpha

Think that issue is fixed now, I viewed a few notifications on my laptop and facebook now marks it as read on my phone

grinds my gears when apps get better treatment on iOS when it's 50/50 market share in the US and 20/80 (!) in Europe
I can understand if it comes out a little earlier on iOS since you don't have to betatest on as many phones as you can get your hands on, but the Android Steam app hasn't been updated for 25 months...

but everybody knows that elegance and quality and class are the exclusive privileges that only come with being an iphone owner
I had to download a program and root my device so I could remove the facebook app because it was constantly crashing restarting itself and crashing again. Never again zuckerberg

Couldn't you just
You know
Grab it from the app drawer and hover over uninstall and follow the prompts?
Imagine going through that much trouble to get rid of an app from the Play store

Not if its a system app

Facebook isn't classified as a system app
[editline]3rd April 2014[/editline]
Unless he has a phone from a carrier that pre-installed it onto the OS

unless it comes pre-installed with your phone
Its a system app on my xperia.
That's so odd that they do that
I've had the new UI for a while now, but it seems anyone can now access it by joining that group.
While there are some issues, it's much much faster than the old UI - I think because it is rendering natively.
There are still a few issues though with version 9 of FB. You'll find that the app will open and close for no reason.
Join the Facebook Beta. I've had this for the last couple of weeks now. Glad its rolling out

The iOS version got a new update that updated the UI for iOS 7 but in turn it made the app horribly slow. Even the android version is better right now.
Did they fix the app draining battery like a motherfucker? Or do I still have to use Tasker to kill it when I close it down?
They still need to fix their fucking Windows client first.
No reason they can't do both at the same time
Im still a bit creeped out that when i update, it wants me to allow it to read my messages on my phone.
Anything is better than the current tablet layout:

Aparantly this is the new layout as well. GG facebook.

No the iOS version is updated fairly often and is far better developed. It has the new Big Picture UI that Valve hasn't even implemented in their desktop client yet (asides from Big Picture itself) and it's much faster whenever they relase updates.

It's only ever gotten 6 updates in it's lifetime and has probably one of the worst UI's I've seen on iOS. Plus doesn't have a proper iPad interface, they just stretched out the phone interface to fit the entire screen.
Yeah facebook still looks like a big expanded phone app on my tablet, at least they made the messenger app sort of tablet friendly

That's because facebook can send text messages now.
I didn't get any FB app update on my Nexus 4.

Gotta get yourself into that alpha/beta program.
I opened the FB app today saw the new look and was pretty surprised. It definitely looks a lot nicer.
