Short version: It's fucked.
Long version: When I start Counter-Strike up, chunks of text are just missing from the menus. When I start a local server to find out how well it runs, I have no viewmodel and the screen flickers constantly. Does Maverick just suck, or did I screw up somewhere?
Linux is not for running Windows applications, just like a Mac is not meant for running Windows applications. However, Windows is meant for running Windows applications. So use it.
Yeah, uh... That's what WINE is for, isn't it?
WINE doesn't do a fantastic job, and even then you'll get much worse performance than on windows, and it's less prone to crashing. i'd really suggest having dual boot for windows and linux, it's the easier option
If I had Windows right now i'd be using it instead.
Did you install the driver for your GPU?
Have you tried disabling Compiz?
ATI drivers were already installed, and removing compiz didn't do anything.

Probably open source drivers, they don't perform as well as the proprietary/restricted ones.
Nope, I made sure I installed the official drivers.

Hahaha. You're kidding right?
Have you ever used the proprietary drivers? They suck enormous amounts of male genitalia.
From my experiences, ATI and linux is not a good combination.

Damn.
if it's a 5xxx card it will be a while before you can play 3D games on Linux

Well great. How does it not work if they provide drivers?
Because the drivers suck dinosaur balls.

I have only tried nvidia, I assumed ATI would've been in the same situation.
The nvidia proprietary driver is pretty damn good, though from experience the ati drivers are horrible with games.

I use the nVidia drivers on linux and they run L4D extremely well.
The nvidia drivers are milestones ahead of ATI's offerings.
I actually played WoW on an 8400GS on Ubuntu 9.04 I think it was. Or 8.10. And it performed damn fine.
