As opposed to all the complacency that currently already exists with motorists using cellphones or otherwise being distracted while driving? Also people said the same thing about cruise control, accidents historically go down as we remove human elements from the equation in just about everything.
These semi-automated cars probably aren't going to stick around for long though. Ultimately we'll have fully automated vehicles that are safer than human drivers even when there's no one to override them.

I agree, but anyone with a semi-autonomous car will be more inclined to not pay attention to the road. Just incase anything does happen, they still need to remain focused. Removing the human from the equation is a far better solution. Its pretty much what they got to at the end of the artcle.
If everyone had an automated car, AgentFaze would still be here :'(
or his dumbass wife would still find a way to crash it

There's already car designs being made around the idea that you don't drive them, the interior has all the seats facing each other with a table in the middle, or it's even styled like a wrap around couch

Still trying to milk that, eh?

If it wasn't really a life or death situation I would say more power to you, but if we can automate the roads having less manually driven cars means more safety.
The less human involvement the less human error the better

You could probably set up tracks off the road for enthusiasts to manually drive around in for their own entertainment.

Or you could stop throwing bandaids at the problem and make licensing/enforcement stricter. The problem isn't going to be solved by tech, only postponed a few years while these things start to wear down and never get serviced because lazy owners get even lazier when they don't have to feel the warped brake rotors in their foot every time they come to a stop.
Instead of praying that computers will be a magic panacea cure, how about instead we make it where holding a driver's license actually means something? Because right now any dumbass with two working limbs, one working eye and enough of a literacy score to sign on the X can get a license, and it's those dumbasses that have made people start fapping themselves raw over self-driving cars in the first place. Remove their licenses and we won't have a need for the computers anymore.

I agree, this is something I've always believed in. There's other countries where it's much tougher to get a license, we should be doing it like Finland.
I don't see why that should halt progress on self driving cars though.

There will still absolutely be a need for computers because they'll still operate more effectively than a human driver no matter how competent they are, and people will still have a need for transportation even if they aren't competent drivers.
I know you have a huge hard-on for cars and you've made it very clear in the past that you despise the concept of self-driving cars for threatening your interest, but society as it exists today simply necessitates motor travel and making access to it more limited only introduces another set of problems. Furthermore even if only very competent drivers are allowed on the road, those drivers are still more dangerous than a computer.

I don't know what country you're in, but for most in the US a car is a necessary because public transport generally sucks, removing people's ability to drive is going to do vastly more harm than good without providing a viable alternative to driving.
Also, in some US states there is mandatory yearly vehicle inspections, which is a far better solution to preventing people from driving around dilapidated vehicles than hoping somehow a drivers license test is going to exclude "lazy" drivers.
In general, a stricter drivers license test is never going to solve the issue of humans driving, because human drivers at their peak of health and fitness still have crap relation times and limited awareness at the best of times, nevermind that they are prone to distraction and heavily reduced performance due to a number of factors.

similar to how agent's wife tries milks their insurance, but with better results

Some people like driving real fast too. Should they be humoured at the expense of the safety of others?
If it hasn't already been posted, check out Moral Machine, it's a real interesting thought experiment.

Maybe in the future they'll automatically take themselves in for inspection & servicing on the expiry of their MOT/equivalent

Cars could diagnose themselves for years now, they will definitely keep this ability after they can drive themselves without supervision.

*insert example of how we wouldn't need computers if we did everything like they did in 20th century*
Drivers sleep, crash and take wrong turns, self-driving vehicles don't. For anyone who isn't a car enthusiast they're a no-brainer.
