A Singapore court has sentenced two young German men to nine months in prison and three strokes of the cane for spray-painting a metro train in the city-state last year.Andreas Von Knorre, 22, and Elton Hinz, 21, were sentenced after pleading guilty to vandalism and trespassing. Both asked for mercy before sentencing and called their acts a "stupid mistake".
"The imprisonment sentence is nine months in total and the mandatory three strokes of the cane," District Judge Liew Thiam Leng said.
They were sentenced to four months in jail for breaking into a suburban train depot in November 2014 and five months and three strokes of the cane for vandalising a carriage with spray paint.
"This is the darkest episode of my entire life," said Von Knorre said. "I am very angry with myself."
Both men fled Singapore after the incident but were caught in neighbouring Malaysia en route to Australia and extradited.
While they should be punished for trespassing into a train depot, caning is ridiculous for such a petty crime.
FYI they strike it on your butt, and 1 stroke is enough to split your butt and give you a scar for life.

Caning is ridiculous for any crime.
A few months I can sort of understand, although I'd think community service and a hefty fine would be more productive since all they did was trespass and vandalize a train (and even then the vandalism was pretty minor if it was just spraypaint). But corporal punishment that causes permanent damage is simply absurd for a modern legal system.
Why would you travel the world to spraypaint things?
Didn't know Singapore still has caning as a punishment, thought they were pretty westernised enough to know that's a shit punishment
Singapore has some pretty backwards and severe punishments for light offenses. Especially drug related stuff. They execute for that.

Nah, we stick to the old British laws even after they left.
Like how we still criminalise homosexuals, set by the british.
And then several years after our Independence, they lifted it in the UK
I think many of the laws are part of 'tradition'
Do locals get lighter sentences for same crime?

No, and likely harsher sentences.

500 grams of weed gets you the death penalty
Yo don't forget chewing gum can get you castrated
-snip-
Once, there was this kid who
Took a trip to Singapore and brought along his spray paint
And when he finally came back
He had cane marks all over his bottom
He said that it was from when
The warden whacked it so hard
Uh, I think I'd be a little more bent out of shape about NINE MONTHS in a prison in Singapore.
That's too much. I wonder what they would have gotten had they pleaded guilty.
I still don't get why these two and the previous Oliver Fricker case get less months for trespassing in a Protected Place than they do for vandalism.
Especially when under the 'Protected Areas and Protected Places Act', it's legal if you fail to stop "after being challenged 3 times by an authorised officer... and ...if necessary to effect the arrest, extend to the voluntary causing of death"

Could be that they're foreign.
Also, the only fortifications are just barbed wires and cameras at the train depots.
What on earth did they spraypaint on that train that makes nine months in prison seem appropriate punishment.

I think the punishments are crazy, but at the same time isn't this nation (and other Asian countries) known for harsh punishments? They should've known what they were getting into, especially since they traveled there to screw around.

It wouldn't look so bad if they let them finish.
I personally hate sprayers (fucking ruin the look of cities and towns, if you want to do art, do it on your personal property or somewhere where it's allowed) and have nothing against Singapore punishing these guys for it in a very strict manner as to show others like them that it won't be tolerated (not just the vandalizing of train carts, but also the trespassing), but seriously, get rid of the fucking capital punishments. What are you? Saudi Arabia?
9 Months of Singapore Prison is more than enough punishment for them and discouragement to others, don't fuck up these guys bums for no reason.

Reminds me of the case of an American teen who was sentenced to caning for vandalism in 1994.
It caused a diplomatic row between Clinton-led USA and Singapore.

Also a Swiss guy got 5 Months Jail and 3 Cane Strokes back in 2010.
What an ass-backwards country.

Well how would you like it if some punks spray paint graffiti on your car or your house? They came here to make a mess on public property. They know what's coming to them. Back in the 90s, we had that Micheal Fray guy who was caned and jailed for vandalizing in Singapore.

Caning is an inherently cruel and inhumane punishment. FFS just use fines and jail sentences like the rest of the civilized world.
What the hell is with these punishments? Just make him clean the shit up and shit nearby and let it be gone.

It's just a spanking and a time out.

I've had it happen before. I never would have dreamed of having the perpetrator physically punished. It's disgusting.
They vandalized a train - Singapore vandalized their asses.

I should also mention, that they broke into a train depot, while the crime is small, the breach is a serious issue, and there's constant alert for terrorism here, so this country does not take it lightly. It could had been terrorist planting bombs on the trains.
I bet no one will even think about vandalising there now
So I guess it works, even though I don't necessarily agree with the punishment
