• Tree Returns Fire on Man Who Used It for Target Practice
Using a tree for target practice sounds harmless enough, right? That wasn't the case for an Iowa man who is recovering at a hospital after the tree he aimed his gun at fired back.
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/man-shoots-tree-tree-fires-back-002913032.html Give that man the death sentence!
He should have listened to his mother (And his teacher and Santa and...)
I'm not an expert on trees and/or proper target range construction procedures but isn't shooting at a tree kinda dumb?
Wow, must have been a hell of a ricochet to make a 180 degree turn and still maintain enough velocity to put the man in the hospital. Might actually be more likely that he shot himself on accident.
I'm not an expert on trees and/or proper target range construction procedures but isn't shooting at a tree kinda dumb?
Depends on a lot of things like the caliber of the round being shot and how tough the tree is, but yeah it could be pretty dumb.
Shooting at live trees is a dick move. Hopefully he learned his lesson.
I don't shoot anything less than rifle calibers at trees.

damn I've heard of bullets ricocheting off steel, but wood?
A bullet can ricochet off of any surface given the right variables.
Well the tree is probably going to die now because he filled it full of holes and opened it wide open to parasites and other nasties. That's probably not what you were asking, but still.
Probably not, the bullets being fired are pretty hot and will singe the entry point. Not to mention trees are pretty resiliant, if not everytime a storm broke off a branch we wouldn't have any trees.

No sir, I wasn't handling my firearm irresponsibly. No, I also wasn't drunk, the bullet just reflected right off the tree..."
Something like this?
Thats been proven fake IIRC. A bullet can't hit something, make a 180 degree turn, then return back with enough velocity to do damage.
Broken branches usually take off the first few layers of bark and inner wood and that's about it. Shooting into a tree can possibly bore holes right into the center of the tree, depending on the weapon used. If any parasites get into those holes the tree is royally fucked.
holy shit calm down, it's a fucking tree there's what, 3000 of them on my plot of land alone?
How was it proven fake
Because a 12.7x99mm bullet can't take a 180 degree turn when it hits a sold piece of iron.
Because a 12.7x99mm bullet can't take a 180 degree turn when it hits a sold piece of iron.
I don't think anyone is suggesting the bullet impacts the target then redirects course exactly in the same path it took still whole. A piece of the bullet jacket or a chunk of metal from the target didn't even go straight to his head it bounced off the ground in front of him first. Even if that video is fake crazy shit like that can still happen

world war tree
Destruction of plant life is illegal in many places for a reason. If you want to enjoy your hobby/passtime then that's fine, but don't tear the shit out of the local wildlife while you're doing it. There are so many other things that you could be shooting at. (Safer too)
as long as its not a protected species I can literally cut down every single tree on land I own. unless I manage to kill one tree a day, I'm fairly sure more are growing than I'm shooting.
From the article:
...on Christmas Day 2012, a Houston man was killed when he was attempting to clear a fallen tree from the street outside his home. During the removal effort, a second tree fell on him, causing the fatality.
:v:
