• Continuing the current trend of distressing news for this month, Formosan Clouded Leopard Confirmed
Thirteen years, 1,500 infrared cameras, hundreds of catnip-baited hair traps and an almost incalculable number of hours in the field have confirmed what scientists have long feared: the Formosan clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa brachyura) is in all likelihood extinct. The subspecies, endemic to Taiwan, was wiped out by poaching, trade in its pelts during the Japanese occupation, habitat destruction and elimination of its natural prey.
http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/extinction-countdown/2013/05/03/clouded-leopards-confirmed-extinct-taiwan/ :smith:
Added to the already long list of other animals that we caused to go extinct.
rip pretty cat it's a shame people cared about your fur more than your life
Well how did that turn out for you poachers, now it's dead and gone and you cant get anymore of it's fur.
I wish more could be done to prevent shit like this happening
Well how did that turn out for you poachers, now it's dead and gone and you cant get anymore of it's fur.
doesn't matter to them, they're already retired in a mansion- they can just sell off the old, rare fur for more now
You may now continue your life as my rug.
Cocks who think like that are the reason we can't enjoy watching these animals in the wild anymore, you ninnyhammer.
I hope we got some of this thing's DNA on file somewhere - we could possibly resurrect it at some point when the technology gets there.
Bullshit, they brought in a kitten at Marcon. EDIT: I deserve Bad Reading ratings, but the clouded leopard at Marcon was not a Formosan.
I hope we got some of this thing's DNA on file somewhere - we could possibly resurrect it at some point when the technology gets there.
I had trouble deciding whether you deserved a rainbow or a clock more. I settled on the pretty one, to commemorate the poor extinct rug material.
Are there any surviving in captivity or is it completely gone?
Are there any surviving in captivity or is it completely gone?
[t]http://i.imgur.com/gJr5kVK.png[/t] :smithicide: [editline].[/editline] If I could get away with it, I would personally kill poachers myself.
It's hard to imagine there are people out there so shallow and vapid that they'll pay so much money for furs that poachers will illegally hunt a species to complete extinction. The poachers aren't the real issue, the real issue is the insatiable demand and willingness to pay high enough prices to make the risks and costs worth it. It's like the tigers going extinct because Chinese people are still backward and ignorant enough to think that wine made out of tiger nuts will cure erectile dysfunction or something.
And Taiwan does nothing to stop it. Great!
Well how did that turn out for you poachers, now it's dead and gone and you cant get anymore of it's fur.
You think they care? They do it to make a buck. Its not a long term investment for them.
Sad day for nature.
doesn't matter to them, they're already retired in a mansion- they can just sell off the old, rare fur for more now
Exactly, poachers don't just sell everything they poach in the blink of an eye. They got stocks, and now that it'll become harder to get this fur, it'll sell at impressive prices. A specy going extinct is a good buisness opportunity to them. Once they're done selling what's left and the animals are gone, they're either too rich to care about poaching anymore or they just move on to another specy. We need to take the war to them, they don't care about headlines and people criticizing them. Hell they obviously don't even care about earth itself, they're genocidal greedy motherfuckers and need to be treated as such.

If they want to be utter dickheads and ruin the awesomeness of nature itself just for money, then they are asking to get their asses handed to them.

Getting caught poaching is a death sentence in some countries.
Wow, you guys seem to think poachers are some sort of Organized crime syndicate. In African Ivory, yes, maybe. But most south east Asian poachers are farmers with an important decision to make. "Do i kill the animal or does my family eat this month". [editline]8th May 2013[/editline] Further, the vapid, shallow fucking assholes are the ones to blame for this. The demand is obviously there, so why can't we prosecute them for having a rare animal fur?

Yeah I guess that we need to make it so that to have any part of any endangered species pelt or what have you, results in prosecution.
And Taiwan does nothing to stop it. Great!
And great Ameristan protects them from "the commies" even though PRC will probably protect the animals there

I doubt there's still much pelt-trading going on. Also, apparently habitat loss due to logging was the main cause of its extinction.
I'll never forget you leopard, you're up there with biggie now.
Well how did that turn out for you poachers, now it's dead and gone and you cant get anymore of it's fur.
It's most likely been extinct for over 20 years. It's only a subspecies of the clouded leopard, which is not extinct. And they'll likely just move on to the next animal. Animals go extinct every day, it's no big deal. People only care because it's cute.
