For decades, John Carmack and id Software have gone hand in hand. Today, the studio confirmed that the industry luminary is leaving id completely.
"John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," said id studio director Tim Willits in a statement to Gamasutra.
...
"John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects," said Willits.
"We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well."

This guy is in the leagues of Gabe Newell to me in terms of video game history.. So sad to see him go. I wonder what he'll do next.
Wow, wasn't expecting this.

He's probably going to work at Oculus full-time.
I hope Id keep up the tradition of GPLing old engines. They are interesting and quite often useful references from a programmers perspective.
John has been the only thing keeping Id on the radar as of the past few years. Now it's totally going to fade into obscurity.
Doubt it, they still own the Quake and Doom IPs
When i read that thread title i was like "WHAT! NOOOOOOOOO". I love that dude and his work.
Doubt it, they still own the Quake and Doom IPs
But how will they use them? That's the important bit.
he's not leaving the industry you guys, he's gonna be working at oculus full time
Doubt it, they still own the Quake and Doom IPs
But they don't distribute the assets and the rest of the game along with them. Just the iD Tech engines. Why else are there so many Quake 3 Arena-like freewares?
I'm sure that he's moving to Occulus. Carmack has always been fascinated with VR, and he's already CTO of the company.
But hey, best of luck, and maybe he can get Armadillo back on its feet.

By making games.

Here's Carmack on the situation:

This guy is my fucking idol. Here's to his future success.
lol rip id software
This does not sound like a mutually agreed parting of ways. :v:
Just checked - he's the last guy from the Wolfenstein era. The next-oldest guy still at id is Kevin Cloud, the assistant artist on Doom and Doom 2 (he's now lead artist). After him seems to be Tim Willits, who joined up with Quake as a designer (now creative director).
Of the original four:
John Romero left after Quake, made Daikatana, failed to make anyone his bitch, and seems to be toiling in obscurity now
Tom Hall left after Doom, joined 3D Realms for a bit, then joined Romero at Ion Storm, and has wandered the game industry since that broke up
Adrian Carmack stuck with id until 2005, supposedly left to pursue art in general but he's suing over some stock issues
John Carmack left just now for Oculus
By making games.
Haven't seen many Quake or Doom games in a while now :v:
We are doomed.
We are doomed.
They created their own doom.

Pun intended?

That's what he used to code Quake on way back in the day. State of the art at the time.

-snip, fucking late-
He's also very good at optimizing stuff. I mean, RAGE works with ~60 FPS on my 6 years old computer.

He should just do vlogs, I hate waiting for quake con to hear him speak.
I don't get the cult around him anymore. Sure, he did some groundbreaking stuff in the 1990s, but he hasn't done anything really important in recent years.
