I'm trying to get into making music and all in a computer, and I think that a good first step would be buying a keyboard and playing around with Gargeband for my macbook pro.
So, can anyone recommend a good keyboard for beginners that could work with my macbook? What input does the mac need to have or what outputs does the keyboard need?
Anything that has MIDI really, and I suppose you'd need an adaptor with usb to the mac.
Or a M-Audio keyboard, they go straight to USB and control Midi
Yeah generally keyboards come with MIDI in and out, which lets your computer and keyboard work together.

Both need to be connected for two-way work.
However MIDI is an old-as-fuck standard, and you'd need an adaptor (which in my experience are expensive as FUCK), or a specialized PCI sound card with MIDI, which isn't an option with a MacBook.
Some newer keyboards should come with simple USB though.

Still expensive
I didn't mean like hundreds-of-dollars expensive but a USB-A to USB-B cable is cheaper
Also what is your address I might send you a valentine next year
I know this isn't what you asked for, but starting with piano I think is a really good idea. First of all, it builds up your finger strength, which means when you have played for a while you should be able to play any keyed instruments really easily. Another advantage when starting with piano instead of a lot of fancy computer things is that you will only focus on your playing, and the music itself. Incorporating the computer into it all would be a better to do after you've learned the basics of playing an instrument and music theory.
