The US state department has instructed New York City's chief medical examiner not to disclose the cause of death of Russia's ambassador to the United Nations.
Vitaly Churkin died suddenly at work in his New York office last month.
The office of the chief medical examiner said that details of his death were being withheld to comply with international law.
Mr Churkin had served as ambassador to the UN since 2006.
The cause of the veteran diplomat's death remains unclear.
"The New York City Law Department has instructed the Office of Chief Medical Examiner to not publicly disclose the cause and manner of death of Ambassador Vitaly Churkin," a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office, Julie Bolcer, said in a statement.
"Ambassador Churkin's diplomatic immunity survives his death," the statement, which was posted online by New York Times reporter Michael Grynbaum, added.
A state department official told the BBC that further comment or details on the results of the post-mortem could not be disclosed because of an agreement between the US and the UN.
I don't know how this stuff normally works but to me this sounds kinda suspicious.
Maybe there's an investigation going on and letting that info out may interfere somehow? Cause otherwise, it's too obviously suspicious. Of course, sometimes the most obvious explanation is the truest. Hard to know
the bizzar thing is that this wasnt some dissenting politician from russia this guy had to be like hand picked by putin as he represented russia at the UN and i cant imagine they would ever have to assasinate him

Well, this appears to be principally at the request of the Russian government,

In a letter to the city's legal office, the United States's UN mission said the Russian government had already complained about statements made by city officials regarding Mr Churkin's medical history.
Russian officials argued that the information was private and that disclosing details could cause embarrassment to the ambassador's family or hurt his reputation.

and complies with international law as noted in the article snippet.

Considering the Russian government was upset when local officials publicly discussed his medical history and potential cause of death, I would assume this is how it normally works.

The U.S is complying with an agreement they have with the U.N which prevents them from releasing the cause of death - not to mention Russia has requested that they keep it private in order to prevent humiliation of the man or his family.
Sounds like assassination but is probably something like auto-erotic asphyxiation.

It's funny since it's already been reported here by pretty much everyone that it was a heart attack that killed him, and I don't really see how it's humiliating, especially considering how goddamn nervous his job obviously was.
Considering that previous death of Russian ambassador resulted in memes, I might understand that
Honestly, if both US and Russia agree to not disclose such info then I'm willing to believe he passed in a "unflattering" manner.
He was a good man, shame his cyanide-itis kicked in
What a shame.
I like how everyone is assuming this is a political assassination that the US is covering up, even though it says in the article that the cause of death cant be released because of agreements with the UN.
Why would the US assassinate an embassador in its own country? The US didnt even do that during the cold war.
