Israel's internal security agency has been authorised to demand "suspicious" foreign travellers open their personal email accounts for inspection on entry to the country.
Shin Bet officials have been given approval for such action in what they deem to be exceptional cases by Israel's attorney-general, Yehuda Weinstein, despite a petition to overrule the measure by a leading civil rights group.
"The threat of using foreign citizens for terrorist purposes is a growing trend," said Nadim Avod, a lawyer in the attorney-general's office. "Searching an email account is to be carried out in exceptional cases only after suspicious or pertinent information has been identified."
However, the examination of email accounts must be carried out in the presence of the individual.
The authorisation stopped short of permitting security officers to demand passwords or other information that would allow email accounts to be accessed by Shin Bet officers.
Emails may be examined for incriminating information, which may be relevant to public or national security, wrote Avod. Foreign travellers can refuse to co-operate, but may be denied entry as a result.
Really? I thought most of the terrorist activity in Israel was done by Palestinian extremists.

Depending on what you define terrorism as, I think the majority is done by Israeli extremists. That is only if you discount rocket attacks however. There are many instances of Arab buildings being burned or something stupid like that just for being Arab.

I meant like the suicide bombings inside Israel.

Okay but that isn't the only form of terrorism.
Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror); are perpetrated for a religious, political or, ideological goal; and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians).
For example, Israeli's burning down Palestinian olive trees can also be considered terrorism.

Not talking about things Israel does, I'm talking about things done against Israel.
The official said that a growing number of those committing acts inside against Israel are foreigners and thus the basis of this whole email thing. I found that surprising as I have never heard of anyone other than Palestinians doing such things.
Who'd be dumb enough to tell them their real email address?

They'll receive an invite code in their email and can't enter Israel until they give the verification
