German media are reporting this morning on an accident that happened on the Autobahn near Munich last night. A 47-year-old man driving a VW Passat apparently lost consciousness while driving. It obviously resulted in a lost control and the vehicle hit the guardrail a few times, but it was still going fast. That’s when the vehicle was spotted by a Tesla driver who realized that the VW driver was unconscious and decided to position his Model S in front of the VW and slow down until the vehicle collided. He managed to bring it to a stop.
https://electrek.co/2017/02/14/tesla-driver-sacrifices-model-s-help-save-man-stroke/ Update: Tesla will pay for his repairs. Wonder what insurance companies are like in Germany. I know they'd completely fuck over the driver financially if this was in the US.
I'd be surprised if Tesla's PR dudes didn't take this as a chance to improve their standing even more.
People who do heroic self-less acts like this really should be rewarded but there's an unfortunately high chance that his insurance firm won't even raise an eye to this and he'll have to dish out the cash if he wants to fix his car. Money sucks.
Wonder what insurance companies are like in Germany. My wife was playing on her phone and hit two people within like two months or something over the summer, not even real damage. The first accident didn't even need to go thru insurance, but the asshole she hit reported it...and his truck was without a scratch. My insurance went, in November, from $374 a month (which was already outrageous) to $671 a month. No crazy high end supercars either. Hers is a 2013 Elantra and mine is a 2013 Civic Si. Insurance is just a legalized scam intended to do nothing but rip the people off you're there to help, allegedly.
I bet Tesla will just offer to replace it for him for the good PR.
why does it matter what car he drove.
Cuz remember...Tesla drivers are saving us from global warming
why does it matter what car he drove.
It's a 70,000 dollar car, it's popular, and Morgen is telsa boy.
I'd report it too if I got hit by an idiot fucking around on their phone.
Never said she wasn't wrong in it, but the damages were significantly less than making me pay 3k every six months more than I was before for the next three years. That's 18 grand. Not 3k for the one accident in repairs, and zero in the other. Calling her an idiot is kinda fucked up though bro.
Insurance companies SUCK in the US. My wife was playing on her phone and hit two people within like two months or something over the summer
Your insurer had all the reason to raise your monthly by the sounds of it.

I think insurance companies are scum but this is not such a case. Your wife needs to keep her fucking eyes on the road when she's driving 1.5 tons of high-speed metal. The fact that she couldn't, and you feel the need to defend her, is why your premiums went up. Think about it.

[editline]14th February 2017[/editline]
Your insurer had all the reason to raise your monthly by the sounds of it.
They don't know that part.
No anyone who is driving a large metal machine going excesses of 30 mph who takes their eyes off the road for games, social implications or anything of that nature is generally an idiot who doesn't value the lives of others. What if she had hit someone out of a vehicle? What if she hit someone prone to medical episodes? Just because "it didn't go as bad as it couldve!" is such a shitty excuse, especially if she did it TWICE in the course of TWO MONTHS.
Not criminal. They give you a ticket bud. They don't arrest you. They don't know that part.
Okay, second try, so your wife commits a civil infraction twice in the summer, causing two accidents that luckily were very minor. Considering insurance premiums are based on risk assessments what happened to you should make total sense. If it doesn't you should think hard about why.
Calling her an idiot is kinda fucked up though bro.
It's not nice, but it's true... If you do something idiotic, you are, by definition at that moment, an idiot. Don't text/phone and drive. Especially if you can't multitask and have a track record of doing this kind of thing.
Fuck anyone who messes on their phone while driving. Maybe you should appreciate she can even get insurance.

I was already being ripped off, now I'm being ripped off more for two very minor fender benders, one of which had zero damage to either vehicle as per insurance adjusters. It's extremely risky and dangerous to pull a maneuver like that, but kudos to the driver for sacrificing his car to potentially save a life. Clearly they're the prime example of what a drivers should be like all over the world. In the US however:
Insurance companies SUCK in the US. My wife was playing on her phone and hit two people within like two months or something over the summer
We have people like this.
Never said she wasn't wrong in it, but the damages were significantly less than making me pay 3k every six months more than I was before for the next three years. That's 18 grand. Not 3k for the one accident in repairs, and zero in the other. Calling her an idiot is kinda fucked up though bro.
She was on her phone. Driving. I'm sorry but that's a purely irresponsible thing to do. What do we call people who repeatedly do incredibly irresponsible things?
Premiums go up for risky driving. Letting your car hit another car is risky driving. If the insurance company found out it happened because she was fucking about with her phone, it'd be even worse. I don't understand why this needs to be explained to you, and you're being argued with because you're trying to claim that the insurance company is "ripping you off" because unsafe driving is happening. Should nothing be done until your wife runs into someone head-on and kills everyone in the car she hits?
My point still stands...
Never said she wasn't wrong in it, but the damages were significantly less than making me pay 3k every six months more than I was before for the next three years. Her being called an idiot should be the least of your worries.
Why is Facepunch full of people that disagree with everyone?
Look, you're talking about a field I work in. You're saying things that I know more about the context of than you might realize. I am going to disagree because you are wrong.

Calling her an idiot is kinda fucked up though bro.
I'm sorry mate but getting into an crash once because you were on your phone = moron, but should've learned from it. Getting into a crash twice because you were still on your phone means you're an idiot, plain and simple. The amount of the damage is irrelevant when in the future it could cause worse. It might seem like the increase to the insurance is a lot but maybe it'll teach her a lesson. When I'm driving, the rare times I even touch my phone is to change the song playing, and I always do that while stationary, I either pull over or do it at a newly red light. Doing it while moving is fucking dumb.
May I ask why you feel "Ripped" off by your insurance policy? Do you know what is covered by your insurance policy?

You pay as much insurance in 2 months as I pay in an entire YEAR. I could literally buy a decent 2nd hand car for 1 year's worth of US insurance premiums.
Calling her an idiot is kinda fucked up though bro.
Playing with a phone while you're driving is pretty idiotic though.
Calling her an idiot is kinda fucked up though bro.

My wife was playing on her phone
It's not "kinda fucked up" when it's true.
