Contrary to popular belief, there is very little evidence to suggest that today's modern sport of basketball evolved from that Mayan game with the horizontal ring. It actually started being played with a soccar ball in Springfield College (Massachusetts, USA) back in the late 1800s. One of their gym teachers - Dr. James Naismith - was looking for a game his students could play when it was raining or snowing outside. He fixed a peach basket to a 10' high track and wrote some basic game rules based around the kiddy game Duck On A Rock. By 1892, the YMCA had picked up on Naismith's ideas (after he had past away and left his journal to his daughter, in which he wrote the new game's details) and held the first official "Basket Ball" game. PhysEd teacher Senda Berenson from Smith College, MA expanded on the game's rules in 1893 and published them in A.G. Spalding's Women's Basketball Guide. The game kept on being played with a soccar ball until the 1940s when a ball specifically made for the game began to be produced. The modern basketball hoop (with backboard and rim) design became standard to accomodate how many players enjoyed "slam-dunking" to score. Today, basketball is enjoyed by all ages of men and women on many levels - there are American professional leagues (and in many other countries), collegiate leages, and it has made it into the Olympics. It's also enjoyed on a recreational level, commonly known in urban settings as streetball. THE OFFICIAL RULES OF BASKETBALL - The game can begin via "checking" the ball (one team passes to other team at center court, which then passes it back and the play begins) or, if there's a referee, via the ref tossing the ball straight upwards at center court for the teams to jump for - In a full court game, 2 teams of 5 players - Get a higher score than the other team (timer or score limit) - Made shots from outside the outermost-arc (3-point line) are worth 3 points - Made shots with any foot on or inside the 3-point line are worth 2 points - You can play full or half court. On half court, when the possession of the ball switches to the other team, that team must take the ball to or beyond the center line before he can legally score - Every player moving with the ball must dribble. This is taking alternating steps while bouncing the ball. He cannot travel with the ball nor can he double dribble - With the ball, the player can dribble, pass, shoot, do a variety of fancy and creative fake-outs, roll, dunk, shoot a lay-up, rebound, or set up for alley-oops. - The ball and all parts of the player must stay in bounds and not even touch the side lines and back lines - Typically, players can call fouls which are overly rough or aggressive physical violations, beyond typical blocking. The other team would then be allowed to try for a free throw from the free-throw line (the horizontal line through the small circle at each end of the court) for 1 point if he makes it. On the recreational level, there are many game variations, including 21, 42, H-O-R-S-E, and Knockout. There are some professional groups that do not play basketball so much for competition but for media and spectator entertainment. And 1 is one of the most popular American groups like this:

I suck at basketball. It's fun though.
Basketball is boring as fuck to watch, as with every other sport, but a blast to play.
The black kids always play this sport at my school.
The black kids always play this sport at my school.
Why
I saw some kid downtown shooting hoops alone. I dunno why, but it got to me. He just drove down to the court, and just started playing. he had no friends there, and it was right by a main street, so everyone could see him. He didn't show off or anything, hell he didn't even care anyone was there. He was just having fun.
Why
Black people are generally more athletic than some other races.
i luuuurve basketball, but i hate women's basketball, and northern iowa for ruining my bracket.
I played basketball for 3 years until I realized I sucked:frown:
I play basqetboll on my team and im like the tightest of tight yo no I'm average but that isn't saying much since it's fucking canada p.s and 1 and street ball is gay pce out

That's why NCAA sucks, it looks like they're bitch slapping each other for the ball.
The players ruin the sport. Most of them are selfish arrogant pricks. I should know - I'm in a team.
I love Basketball as a participation sport but it sucks to watch.
Black people are generally more athletic than some other races.
God was racist :(
That's why NCAA sucks, it looks like they're bitch slapping each other for the ball.
NCAA is a fucking joke, man.
NCAA is a fucking joke, man.
Better than the WNBA.
WNBA makes me laugh every time I watch it. I play center most of the time, sometimes power forward; this thread needs more Dirk Nowitzki.
This thread is in need of more Kevin Durant [editline]03:13AM[/editline] Also: LAKERS AHAHAHAHAHAHHA
